For that price he might find 2-3 complete units, with the exactly same board inside and make his own dream controller using the parts or use them as standalone.Tone Deft wrote:this looks like a pretty simple DIY to make a Pocket Control.

There is this: Allen & Heath Zed R16 mixer: analog mixer/MIDI controller/Firewire interface all in one. Finally!
http://www.allen-heath.co.uk/zed/zed-R16.asp
damn thats impressive. id love one for my studio. a very 'all in one' kind of a box.
to lug that thing out for an ableton set would be pretty silly though unless u were playing with a band or multiple people at once.
also to be noted is that the full thing isn't able to be switched to midi control mode. only the channel faders and of course the small section in the lower left full of dedicated midi knobs and faders.
still. that thing looks fucking ace

If it's successful (which it probably won't be, considering how the world works ) then maybe a software update or the next model will have more MIDI implementation.
I'm crossing my fingers because this is the trend I'd like to see explored: actual mixers that act as MIDI controllers. Plus they can drop the audio interface as far as I'm concerned.

Re: COntroller of JUST Bank of Knobs (pots)?
^^^ well it all exists. There are top 'mixing desks' desks (midi) that can do all you require, they just cost a lot of money.
mackie, euphonix, digi design, to name a few. It is just not for the consumer market.

It's that "they just cost a lot of money" thing that hangs me up.
I'd like to see a mixer/controller hybrid that is targeted at the same folks who buy smaller mixers & MIDI controllers now.
Korg had their models, which looked good on paper, but seem to have a variety of problems. Had they just ditched the sound card & lowered the price they might have got my money.
I bought these instead:
Speck Xtramix = analog mixer
Speck EQ16-32 = 16 channel stereo EQ
Doepfer Drehbanks = MIDI controllers: potentiometers
Doepfer Pocket Dials = MIDI controllers: encoders
Faderfox LD2 = MIDI controllers: encoders with Native Support in Live
Faderfox LX1 = MIDI controller: buttons
Now if there was only a way to combine them all into one wonderful device...

Re: COntroller of JUST Bank of Knobs (pots)?
i bought the faderfox dj2 and loved the knobs. then i got the ld2 just for having tons of knobs. i somehow didn't realise that they where endless knobs, which make them useless for me.
now i just abuse the 2 vertical + 1 horizontal faders and 7 knobs of the faderfox dj2 for my needs (i have 3 of them by now )

the problem with non-endless controllers is 'encoder pickup.' you tweak a filter with a knob then change the knob to control a fader level or whatever and you have to use 'scaling' pickup mode. scaling mode works great but you lose that part of the feel.
+1 on the BCR but you've heard that story.

Hi, just randomly stumbled on this thread. I have a Doepfer Drehbank I'm selling. Let me know if you are interested. I was going to put it up on Ebay but we could discuss a price.
Re: COntroller of JUST Bank of Knobs (pots)?
how cool could it be to find an old DJ mixer that doesn't work, tear the guts out and use the mixer's potentiometers to turn it into a midi interface?rikhyray wrote:For that price he might find 2-3 complete units, with the exactly same board inside and make his own dream controller using the parts or use them as standalone.Tone Deft wrote:this looks like a pretty simple DIY to make a Pocket Control.

Re: COntroller of JUST Bank of Knobs (pots)?
OK, but what do you want?, the most complex item in a studio (even if it is only a pure midi controller) in the quality of SSL to the price of behringer?oblique strategies wrote:It's that "they just cost a lot of money" thing that hangs me up.
and not just that it is complex, but the way you use it, demands good components such as faders and potis... a good single fader cost the price of a launchpad. i mean get into reality here.
on the other hand there are cheap solutions that work very well, but of course they are not perfect.

Re: COntroller of JUST Bank of Knobs (pots)?
OK, I don't need the LED-rings (hardware, baby!) so surely it wouldn't cost more than a Mackie or Behringer of simillar size?
People go "ooh... 140 pots" but that many pots in analog mixer world is completely common!

140 pots, no that is nothing, have a look at a H 3000 Live console (which is standard, nothing out of the ordinary)Pitch Black wrote:OK, I don't need the LED-rings (hardware, baby!) so surely it wouldn't cost more than a Mackie or Behringer of simillar size?

the price, well i really think, made well, yes like a good mackie or euphonix.
behringer would be obviously cheaper, but then we do not talk quality anymore.
damn iPhone typing... Grrrr...

i have it since 2003 and still in love! not a light one (you can kill with) but as solid as heavy! i think its discontinued but go get one used if you can.rikhyray wrote:Try to find this Doepfer unlike Pocket dial which has endless pots this one is smaller, cheaper and has no endless pots you want.
