magazine recommendation
magazine recommendation
does anyone know of a monthly magazine that goes into eq - compression - production, engineering and mixing techniques regardless of which DAW or hardware that you are using?
i used to buy computer music on a regular basis and been though there is always something to learn im finding that often the bulk of the magazine is stuff that im not looking for - i often ended up paying kr1.000, £6 whatever for only 1 or 2 articles that i found helpful -
im wondering if there is some publication which is a bit more focused if you see what i mean !
thanks

Re: magazine recommendation
the only mag i think is really worth getting as an allrounder is S.O.S. (sound on sound, a british publication) well it deals not only with production techniques, but it has a good tips and tricks section for all of the most popular DAWs (including Live) and usually a very interesting 'how was that tune or album recorded / produced...
general hardware reviews, new, etc.
i find it after all those years still a solid mag around.

Re: magazine recommendation
eh, why don't you just buy a book on the subject like:
http://www.mixingwithyourmind.com/
or
mastering audio - the art & science by bob katz

Re: magazine recommendation
I've been working at the Carousel Mall in Syracuse lately and I have been going to the borders for my lunch break and reading all the different audio production magazines (for a possible subscription and because I care not for the sample discs and those mags cost upwards of $20 here in the states). Anyway, I agree that S.O.S is the best to sit and read from cover to cover. I find that with Computer Music and Future Music (very similar and owned by the same parent, yes?) I only read a few articles (mostly pertaining to Live) and I don't really want to mess with the third party plugs that they use in the demos. As a side not, something else that bugs me is that they carry every damned musician magazine under the sun except for Keyboard Magazine!

Re: magazine recommendation
Definitely Sound On Sound. They have a monthly series where they sit down with famous mixers and you can see all the settings they used on various plug ins to do the mix.

Sound on Sound for sure.
I have had a subscription for about 3 years now as I get it every year for my birthday.
It is really good for people starting out and people who are fairly advanced.
I also have that book "Mixing with Your Mind" which I got for Christmas. I am slowly working my way through it and it is well worth the money.
I would suggest getting both.

+1 Sound On Sound, it's the best. Secrets of the Mix Engineers rules. They have a podcast too, super dry, they don't do hype just lots of detail & good info.
Tape Op is very good also.
