[ot] Haiti thing is making me really sad...

Post by mikemc » Thu Jan 14, 2010 12:37 am

maybe it shouldn't, things happen in earthquake zones, but these pictures of living, injured and dead people with powdered concrete all over them...

9/11 was bad, and it was not a 'natural' thing, and it was very disturbing and still is.

but these people in Haiti not only go thru a couple of major office buildings being destroyed, they go thru seeing most of their country destroyed, and it isn't like they had all that much to start with.

so I am sad.

It is sad indeed. The only very slightly redeeming thing about situations like this are that it puts things in perspective for the rest of the world who for whatever reason think they themselves have it bad. Sort of makes an economic crisis look like nothing, really.

I'm highly disturbed at the sensationalism of this and other tragic situations of the past several years. I really noticed it with the "Fort Hood Massacre." The media gives something a flashy title (I think the Weather Channel is calling this one "The Quake in Haiti"), have their station's graphic design team try cook up a logo, make a nice little montage of all the video footage of dying broken people, put some suspenseful music over it... It's like a fucking TBS movie promotion. This is not reality TV, it's fucking reality. How irrevocably fucked up must the media have made us for us to confuse illusion with reality so easily?

Grubby fucking slimeball executives sitting in their heated offices trying to come up with ways to get people to turn the TV to their channel, blatantly disregarding the delicacy of the issue and knowingly trivializing - if not making a mockery of - the death of tens or hundreds of thousands.

what infuriates me is people saying they deserved it or had it coming.

The majority of the world deserves nothing like this to happen to them.

Probably the same people in the Bible belt who always say people deserve it, but is anyone listening to them?

 Pact with the devil? "No this is true." Jeeezus…

What Limbaugh said doesn't seem too different from typical things that political pundits on both sides of the political extremes always say. Give me an "Obama approves of the earthquake" and I'll give you a "Bush is Hitler." Booooring.

^thats not really the point is it?
this pat guy seems to have completely fucked up his history: Toussaint L'Ouverture was the leader that freed Haiti, not the devil. not only a douche, but an evil, foul douche of the highest order...

yeah but if you really see them as the same thing then that comparison wouldn't make sense cause you'd just be stating to wrongs about the same entity.
this is why you'll never see me comparing bush and obama cause it's not the point

Makes perfect sense to me to compare unreasonable statements made by people who are hopelessly locked into their ideology (regardless of which side they're on).
