ouch! - I had to hit the stop button 30 mintues in - these guys have REALLY lost it - especially the atonal horn section around 21:00.
And Mezzanine was one of my favorite records of all time... sad.

Call me old fashioned, but I really really liked it. Has a great sort of Haitian/creole vibe with a touch of New Orleans in many tracks. They've done world music type stuff before, and made it work with electronic grooves where others just look gimmicky. Great to hear some music that's not all about fist pumping 4 to the floor for once, with frigging hoover and epic leads. I love the soulful melancholy in some of the tracks - probably the miserable bugger goth and addiction to The Smiths from 1984-1987 I had in me, he he.
The atonal horns were brilliant. In a world full of max quantized, over zealous, every little thing pitch corrected, it was a refreshing change. The production quality was awesome too, less verby than some of their previous releases but it works and ambient spaces really give a massive depth when required.
Good stuff, glad they're back - although I'd like to heard some of the stuff they threw out, I bet some of that was tasty.

I find this part absolutely gorgeous and multi-dimensional. And any track with Horacy Andy in it is an absolute winner in my book anyway.FlightPlan wrote:ouch! - I had to hit the stop button 30 mintues in - these guys have REALLY lost it - especially the atonal horn section around 21:00.

The first track I didn't like initially but it's really wormed into me after a day or two. Like 100th Window... I like some of the tracks and some I skip.
Re: First Listen: Massive Attack, 'Heligoland' until Feb. 9
It's what 100th Window should have been IMHO.
Very impressed on first listen I must confess.
Far better than I had anticipated to be brutally honest with you.
If I was to play this back to back with Blue Lines, Protection, Mezzanine, Danny the Dog Sound track then this it's a far more logical musical progression.
They all sit well together as an entire unit.
Hard to pick a favourite track either and the opener is a corker I must confess.
My first new album purchase of 2010 and it's a good one .

Somewhere between a rock and a hard place is actually nowhere.

Same here, this music is really really deep. Great sound, and a surface simplicity hiding much more details.FORMAT wrote:I find this part absolutely gorgeous and multi-dimensional.
