Interesting Sound Art

Post by fsk » Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:11 am

Hello,

I graduated last year in Sound Art & Design and was wondering if anyone could recommend any pieces of interesting sound art work that they have seen online?

I'm looking for some inspiration, losing it working full-time at the moment doing boring editing.

Thanks

This is an installation a buddy of mine is (or was?) working on as an undergrad art/research project. I'm not sure where he's at with it these days to be honest as I haven't heard him speak of it lately.

Anyway -
Cyclical Nature of Obsolescence

An investigation of the sculptural possibilities of vinyl records and their content.

The Project is to construct six columns, each 8 feet tall, using 12-inch records as the building material. Those six columns will then become the building blocks for a larger, hollow column comprised of the smaller six. In the process, I'll be taking a 2-second sample from each of the 6,000-8,000 records. The resulting samples will be used in an audio piece to be played on a constant loop from within the column.

This research grant will be assisting me in building a sculpture/installation that investigates our cultural involvement in the consumption and rejection of technology. My research will allow me to investigate the sculptural properties of vinyl LPs in their physical presence as well as investigating the sculptural abilities of the content that exists on each of the LPs. This research will lend insight to my continued work with sound and how it can be represented in a physical space. This piece aims to initiate a dialogue that will span both cultural and generational boundaries in an effort to find a middle ground and our cultural commonalities.

thank you both, very interesting stuff, love what your friend has done and has a great concept behind it Smutek.

I'm mainly looking for my girlfriend who is in her final year of Information Design. She wants to incorporate sound into one of her final pieces. I'm guessing the best way is representing data through sound but she also wants it visually.

Any ideas from anyone? my friend plotted pollution in London through 5 channel sonification but I really don't want to go down that route. (I saw how much he had to program in max)
