Playing shows
Don't know if someone has asked this before, couldn't find anything.
When playing live at a show, how do you hook up your laptop to the sound board? Do you use an audio interface, use a usb audio out, or just through the audio out on the laptop?
I have some shows coming up and I am trying to figure out what the best method is?
Thanks.

Re: Playing shows
Thanks senator adam.
question though, I do have an audio interface (focusrite saffire pro 24) that connects to my computer via firewire. But when I run from the out of the interface into the mixer, I have a humming noise and anything i play is very quiet. Now when I bypass the interface and just go out of the computer, everything sounds fine.
What can I do to fix this? Any ideas?

Re: Playing shows
a propper cable? if your safire is not broken you are either using the wrong output or the wrong cable...
you might be better of to just use the laptop outputs when you dont have a better grip on your external hardware yet...

When playing at a club with just my laptop and the midi controller, I use a cable that goes to the mixer, no external soundcard. When playing with the band or my electronic Duo project, I use a RME Multiface and an Allen & Heath ZED14 mixer both as soundcards (for Live,Guitar Rig and the machines) .
Re: Playing shows
Audio interface > mixer. Bring a variety of cables and adapters since you never know what you will be plugging in to.

The only problem I have so far is when I go from the output. The cord is fine. I have used it with my microkorg. No sound problems there. When I am just recording, no problems with the saffire. Of course I am coming out of it via a quarter inch jack, so I have to use either a direct box or a quarter inch jack to a xlr adaptor.

Yes, the audio sort.
Sorry... I'm really bored at work and feeling cynical.

Re: Playing shows
are you on PC ??? firewire audio interfaces with certain PC's can create a weird feedback hum sometimes - Ive experience the same thing with M-Audio firewire cards and presonus firewire... USB instead of firewire with PC's
go with a USB audio interface and see the difference -

All mac, a 13" white macbook. With my setup, the firewire works perfect since my two usb slots are taken.frequentare wrote:are you on PC ??? -

"very quiet with a hum"
that sounds like you are using unbalanced cables and going into a box which is expecting microphone impedance.
I normally try to cut out all unknowns with stage-boxes as you never know what history of abuse and maintenance they have suffered.
One PA company might be excellent, and the next terrible.
The next minute a guitarist might have nicked the batteries/cable out of one.
To avoid these issues...My awful secret: I own one of these.
It's a kind of flexible DI box rack, as made by everybody's favourite hardware manufacturer
Behringer
and yes, yes, I know.
But - it does the job when it's needed. Many PA engineers have suddenly overcome their nausea when this box has been required to fix our collective problems.
Also, handy for flipping to an MP3 player if the worst happens
