Abbey Road Studio For Sale

Post by 90's child » Wed Feb 17, 2010 8:40 am

Guys, we've reached an iconic moment in the industry we call music.

EMI have put up Abbey Road Studios for sale.

There will be a minute silence in the General forum today at 11am.

EMI already let another historic studio Olympic *The Beatles also recorded there, as did the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, U2, Radiohead and more* go to pot and it's still up for sale but gutted of all the studio equipment. U2 were supposedly interested in buying it but that fell through. Now Abbey Road.

That Terra Firma who took over EMI have got a lot to answer for !

well, it looks like a 'trend' the mighty townhouse studio (i lived just down the road in london) iron maiden, etc. loads of the 80s 'metal' hit records where recorded there, died as well a few years back already... i think the whole garage / home studio thing is really threatening the giants as well, berwick street studio in soho, london (roger waters, etc.) also died already many years ago... it's a sad trend somehow.

Smaller medium sized project studios and a lot of artists actually hiring non studio space (a practice which goes back to Led Zeppelin days, who recorded most of IV and some of Physical Graffiti in an old country mansion) such as picturesque cottages and the like and then hiring gear has become quite normal. This plus many artists have their own studio rigs in basements or extensions which are more than good enough for demos, or even for laying down much of the backing track and arrangement, cutting down on expensive studio time elsewhere.

Another reason I'm glad to be out of that business, talk about a saturated market. All these people doing Protools courses thinking they're gonna be working alongside Trevor Horn or Quincy Jones within a couple of years are going to find there are 500 vacancies for 50,000 applicants, and if they are lucky to get in, will be on minimum wage or thereabouts for several years afterwards ... Oh well. If you're sub 20 and can stay with mommy and daddy for a while, it might still be fun .....

Maybe Apple will buy it, demolish the building, and put an Apple store in it's place.

Olympic is a grade II listed building.

Abbey Road OUGHT TO BE if it's not a listed building (different media reports vary in it's listed status)

This affords some protection - yes, the studio could be converted into apartments but the structure would have to be left pretty much intact, especially the exterior.

Probably McDonalds will buy it and put their Golden Arch spanning the crosswalk for extra taste.

Not at all surprising, I mean we all have the ability to record a full album ourselves just w/ Live. W/ the declining industry in general (at least some of the moguls) it really is no surprise that a lot of these pro recording studios are going under.

Sounds like some of you are suggesting it's going to be next month's no-brainer deal on audiomidi.com.

But it will probably require iLok, so fuck that.
