Nothing has grabbed me since mezzanine, and I don't follow them much anymore, but I just read they put out a new album, and I wanted
to know if it is any good, or at least hear some opinions.

I really liked it a lot. It was on the npr site to listen to for a few days, so I had a listen. If I had the money to buy it I would.

it's good. it's not disappointing. and not huge step forward either..I found it to be lame at points...
that said .
it's a beautiful Massive Attack album. pretty dark.minimal.each sound just 'fits'.amazing vocal tracks (except the Damon Albren one imo).
what you'd come to expect.
a very nice listen.
bottom line : I say get it .

I've listened to it a couple of times on Rhapsody. It's mixed. Some of it I love, some of it I think "You know, just because they'll *let* you do anything you want in the studio, doesn't mean you should release it..."

I think it's the best thing they've done for a LONG time, and shows amazing growth in the types of sounds they are willing to meld into their music. Definately the best thing since Mezzanine anyway. I'm not even all that big a fan of them, I mean I love Blue Lines and Protection which were ahead of their time, Mezzanine was good, the last album before this, not so much.

I really liked '100th window'...I think it's better than this one..
I also liked 'no protection'(mad proffesor)...more than the original

Mezzanine was their peak imo...

100th window - it was OK but I prefer the new Heligoland. Just goes to show you how subjective taste is

The new album is also close to sonic perfection - really great recording, excellent use of ambient space, light on compression and very dynamic (especially beautiful are the horns and hand percussion and the choice of reverb/delay) and good use of stereo image. This all means little if the arrangements and material is junk, but as someone who worked in recording studios as an engineer, the production and engineering on this album are like a wet dream

If I could get my home studio to sound like this record, I'll die a happy man ... maybe there is the odd tad self indulgence and another producer might have hit the edit button a few more times, but overall, I just was really surprised to like it so much.

It took me a few listens but am really enjoying it now. As already been said, it's an incredible 'sounding' record.

It doesn't have many singles that you'd want to put on repeat IMO, but as a whole album it works well together. I'll be seeing them live in about a month and I'm pretty pumped!

It's certainly an easier listen than 100th Window, although I did like that as well.

Always interesting that all an artist needs is a few great tracks or a great album for people to take the time to convince themselves they like any subsequent release for the duration of that artist's career. "It really grew on me after the 12th listen." If it was a new artist they wouldn't make it past the 30 second previews.

But hey, makes more sense than sports fanatics. Some teams won't have a good season for decades and the fan will still claim they are great mostly based on players and coaches that are long gone. Or they'll always support the local team despite nobody on the team or staff being born in that area. Mostly you're just celebrating your team's bank account and who it's able to afford. That makes no sense.

^ I suppose that's what the credibility of repeated brilliance buys you these days - a bit more patience to see if new material grows on you. Your observation is indeed astute...new artists get much less time these days to see if the material is any good...part of the throw-away nature of today's devalued music. Easy to get. Easy to digest. Even easier to shit out.\

As for this record, I liked it better than 100th Window, but nowhere close to Mezzanine. You can't deny how genius it was to use Liz Frazier and a 909 on the same track. Gives me goosebumps! Then again, MA's first record was so far ahead of it's time that people didn't even know how to receive them.
