Video screen capture for ableton live video tutorials?

Post by roothewhirl » Thu Mar 18, 2010 10:26 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm in the middle of setting up an Abelton Live tutorial blog, and i'd like to post some tutorial screen casts. The only problem is, I can't seem to figure out a way to get audio from Ableton (just a stereo mix of everything going on in Ableton) as well as a mic input going into my video capture software. I am using "CamStudio" (a great, free open source video capture software), Ableton Live 8, and a Firewire Solo Audio Interface. Oh, and I am using a PC.

I see plenty of people doing screencasts like this...so how would I go about doing it? Thanks!

Have a look at soundflower from cycling 74, i use it to get the audio from ableton into screenium, you'll probably need to route your mic into ableton though (which is no bad thing if you use a voice ducker (it's in the library) on the audio tracks....

Cheers

Thanks S4racen,

But I think Soundflower is only proprietary to OSX :( Great idea for recording audio from a mic, though!

I'm using Camtasia and don't need to route a Live track for the mic. It's not the greatest quality but sufficient for screen casting. Good luck with your project.

Hey Terrence,

Are you getting Ableton's output through Camstasia as well? I've tried running Camstasia, and have had no luck being able to route audio from Ableton Live directly into it with my M-Audio Firewire Solo. If I could just get the audio from Ableton into Camstasia, I would be golden!

From what I can remember, I use my Mbox's headphone out routed to my soundcard and I have my soundcard out connected to a an input channel on my mixer (direct output routed so no loopback just monitoring). Camtasia doesn't see the Asio drivers at all.

I used camstudio as well,

but you can find better!!!! freeware like camstudio
Camstudio always sync out audio and video after two minutes of playback

go there  http://smallvideosoft.com/

and take freez screen video capture

For audio recording you need stereo mix and in live>> MME driver , not asio or something else.
direct sound from the default soundcard...

you'll surely have to compress and edit after recording but there are freeware or opensource projects that can easily help you

About shareware I don't know well but there are some powerful softwares.
some expensive amongst others

Like camtasia [299$] which can zoom focus and edit after record.
it looks like the more powerful.

any advice would be welcome

EDIT: there's a new version of camstudio, http://camstudio.org/dev/
it works better even if I do prefer freez Screen video capture.
