Hi-Fi recommendations

I am not looking for monitors I am looking for something that sounds fab.

Just some speakers and an amp will do. I will use a computer with a decent DAC to supply the signal.

Budget : i dunno.

Good call. I would say avoid anything with buttons labled "Pop" "Rock" Dance" "Slightly-out-of-phase-in-an-Enormous-Cavern" etc etc


I would go a second-hand NAD amp and KEF speakers perhaps... or second-hand amp/new speakers. Buying separate components would be a good way to pay for just-the-quality.

+ 1 for NAD in the reasonable pricerange, or linn for not the most expensive but surely best, and i don't take any arguing about that

as for speakers B&W or wharfedale diamond 8.2 or again anything by linn ( it's a small scottish company and non arguably the best home hifi gear made, real value for real money)

He's right about Linn y'know. Not cheap, but very very good.

The old KEF 3 way speakers from the 70s and 80s are mint, if you find some in good condition on ebay definately worth a punt. Sound On Sound deputy editor and ex BBC head acoustics sound engineer Hugh Robjohns also likes them a lot.

The other recommendations above are also great suggestions. I don't know if Mordaunt Short still make good speakers, but their higher range used to be pretty handsome sounding hifi speakers too back in the day (esp. the MS40s), one of my first jobs was working in retail selling hifi, albeit 2 decades ago now...
