If lol is so annoying, then why isn't the addition of any emoticon? Isn't adding lol after a sentence the exact same thing as a laughing emoticon ... i.e. here is what i wrote and now i'm laughing so i'm gonna add lol.
Well as stupid as it may sound, in my headspace I see the emoticon as the person actually looking like that. Yes, we're all round yellow faced people. When I see the text representation I visualize the person sitting at their desk thinking they're all clever or insecure.
But also men are visual. Men watch porn while women read romance novels. I'm not saying women don't watch porn, but I am saying most men don't read romance novels.

You've really gotten quite dickish since your return. What gives? What happened to sweet, kind Neb?
He's just exploring the "dom" side of the equation. Yield to his whip!

The wink is the most subtle and often misunderstood emoticon, IMO. I like the Ableton forum's wink
although it comes across a tad smug. But most others are way too cutesy-poo. Sometimes I want a knowing wink, sometimes a friendly wink, sometimes ironic, sometimes condescending, sometimes encouraging. It's a lot to ask of one little icon. :sigh:

I watch porn and hate romance novels, but I wouldn't describe myself as visual necessarily.
But back on topic ... do text emoticons need space around them?

I just go by what looks right to me at the time. You'd probably be hard-pressed to find anybody under the age of 20 that even bothers to use spellcheck anymore so looking for standardization in text emoticons usage is probably a test in futility.

Absolutely. I put one space before and after any emoticon in normal text. I also put a space between an emoticon if it is a sentence ender and requires punctuation afterwards. So if I said, "Tod, you skany whore
."

But that's what's cool -- the lack of standardization means that I can set the standard and suddenly I'm the authority. Gotta love the Internet.

But you're too old to be the boss of anything on the Internet.
You could be the boss of our attention if you honor the nudity request, but that too would be fleeting.

Don't tell other women this, but there's a big difference in standards between what we get off on privately and what we'll admit to in public. You're still golden and you have the civilian porn advantage.
