A free rush...
A free rush...
Have a credit card I haven't been using with a zero balance on it. I called up to cancel it. They asked "why are you cancelling?".
I said "To eliminate banking services. I am eliminating as many banking services as possible."
A wonderful silence occurred, followed by the obligatory attempt to get me to reconsider, which gave me the opportunity to repeat what I had said.
That phrase frightens them. [edit] I encourage you to do the same.

pfffffffft.
Real men max out the credit card and ignore the subsequent 'threatening' letters for months.
Then they cancel the card for you.
FTW.

fwiw, I really am getting rid of as many banking services as I can.
It is a huge trap, you set up automatic payments to cover the minimum and then some and think you are all fine.
Then they switch your date so you miss a payment, and then that affects your minimum and boosts your interest rate. Then they lower your limit so you go over the next time you buy something.
Then they lobby the government to keep allowing them to do all of that, the only new restriction is that they just need to tell you a little sooner when they are going to jerk your chain.

I have 1 credit card to my name. It has a $300 limit. I pay the total due every month. The only reason I even have that is to keep some kind of good credit rating on record.
Flashing the contents of my wallet may not impress the ladies but at least I completely own everything I have.

Re: A free rush...
I just cancelled my 'savings' account because the bank was screwing me. Any time it dropped below $300 I got dinged for a couple bucks. Maybe only happened once or twice a year, but the 2 cents in possible interest earned did absolutely nothing to counter it. I definitely lost money in my savings account, so now I'm down to 1 credit card and 1 checking account.

Take a look at your credit report in 60 days or so. Make sure it reflects that the account was closed at the "customers" request, and in good standing. Sometimes the banks pull a sneaky, and just put "account closed" on the credit report, which lowers and screws your credit in the long run, even though you did the rational and intelligent thing....mikemc wrote:fwiw, I really am getting rid of as many banking services as I can.

On that note, what's the best site to get the most detailed and accurate credit report? There's a lot of half ass sites out there right now that ultimately just want you to shell out money for more options and monitoring.aisling wrote:Take a look at your credit report in 60 days or so. Re: A free rush...
Cool thanks.
I heard somewhere that it's been proven several times that the credit rating system and scores we use now aren't really an accurate indicator of anything and amount to jack shit except in extreme cases. But the world financial systems will continue to use it anyway.

I think a lot of us on here could survive without a credit card if it wasn't for music gear and software. Combine that card with online retailers that do monthly payment plans and it's go time.v0ins315 wrote:Just signed up for a credit card. Buying 8 suite with it.
