This is probably a really dumb question, but is there something that does the opposite of compression? I have a loop with a quiet but distracting cowbell and triangle running through it. It's distracting, and ruins a brilliant sample.
Is there a way to make the quiet bits of a loop even quieter?
I tried fiddling with multiband dynamics, but removing these trebley noises takes too much away from the rest of the sound.

sounds like you might have to do a little cutting & splicing.

gate?? depends on your source material but a gate will work if the cowbells or whatever are not playing on top of what you want to keep. or you could try some selective volume cuts or eq.

an expander is your friend.

As yellow said, an expander does just that.
