Best headphones for studio use. Low end important

Post by xenomachino1 » Sun May 02, 2010 3:18 am

I produce tracks with a lot of low end and sub base. I have like 4 different listening sources but none of them is good at telling me "what's in the mix". let me correct that. High end, no problem, low end.... big problem :)

Any suggestions or techniques greatly appreciated.

thank u

Try taking a look at the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro. I haven't compared a lot, but these were recommended for low-end, usually one of the problems of mixing through headphones. Since I often have neighbors complaining about my music, I decided to fork over the $200 for these.

Google reviews for yourself.

just checked out reviews on the DT 770's. Everyone seems happy with the "uncolored" low end they offer. Seem like a great option. Everyone tried the Ultrasone's? I hear those are great for low end as well.

Audio Technica ATH-M50s are the best bang for buck with a great low end IMHO. Beyer Dynamics DT770 are very good, but I don't know if they're worth $100 more than the Audio Technicas.

Or Sony 7506 or 7509HDs. *the latter are best but the former offer great bang for buck and are still quality*

These recommendations are for studio headphones, not DJing.

DT 770s here. No complaints, one of the rare pieces of equipment that just works like it's supposed to.

Beyer dynamic DT 990 here, beautifull sound, deep bass. and open headphones so it's more confortable. Don't use them to record an instrument next to a microhpone tought.

There's a review in TapeOp this month of the Shure SRH840.
It's compared to the DT770pro,ATH-pro700,Sennheiser HD280 and HD650.
They compare mixing with these with the result on monitors.
Shure and HD650 come out best, next are the ATH and DT.
The 280 is not worth it.
Since the Shure seems to have a really good bass response and is much cheaper I'd check that out.
I bought a Sennheiser HD580 myself about 10 years ago and it's still ok.
But the reason i bought it is that not every headphone fits comfortably on all heads.
You should think about that too!

Did some research on the Sure's and they now seem like the best option. I was blessed with big ears though and have heard they are not comfortable on them :)

but so far its looking like Sure's are first (which are going for $165 new).....followed closely by the beyerdynamics.

Has anyone tested the Sure SRH840?

thanks for the help guys

akg 271 studio. I compared all common closed cans (sony, DT770pro, DT990,...) and I think the 271 is the most neutral sounding closed one, really deep and tight bass but not overemphasized. but I would consider an open headphone like the 650HD too.

But the best is to check it out yourself.

In Sound On Sounds headphones test in January 2010 they recommended the following

Audio Technica AT-HM40 (best budget tracking), AT-HM50
AKG K702 - open back
Beyer Dynamic DT770 (best mid priced all rounder)
Sony 7509
Sennheiser HD280 Pro, HD251 II Pro, HD650, HD800 ($1399, the most expensive in the test, best high end studio phones).

Open back headphones are more comfortable for mixing (i.e. K702s, HD 650s, etc) but not good for tracking because being open back they leak audio.

The phones they rated as 'disappointing' were Ultrasone Pro 900 and Fostex T50RP. 2 of the reviewers said they found the Shure headphones a tad too much on the high end and fatiguing, although one reviewer really liked them.
