apc20 note mode not working in 8.1.3

Post by Andymann » Mon May 03, 2010 8:32 am

hi there,

am i missing something?

got an apc20 configured as control interface (only). working fine.
when switching to note-mode the interface (i.e. lights) of the apc change (because it's in note-mode...) but nothing happens within the selected track/ instrument, not even midi input being indicated.

(even though the apc20 is correctly sending midi notes - checked it with midiox)

Hi Andymann,

Have you tried enabling the Track switch under MIDI sync preferences (beside the APC20 MIDI port)? Also, is the track's record button enabled?

And since you seem to be set up for it (with MIDI-Ox), could you tell me which notes the APC20 is using in Note Mode? The quickstart guide seems to contain an error, and I've not been able to locate a proper note map for the APC20, but it should be something like:

Left side: C1 to G2 - note numbers 36 to 55 (or 24 to 43?)
Right side: G#2 to D#3 (or D#4?) - note numbers 56 to 75 (or 44 to 63?)
Channel for both sides - ?

Best regards,

Hanz

hi hanz,

i'm not quite sure, but the notes being sent in note-mode are the same than they are in normal mode (or whatever it might be called). the note-mode-button just sends one ordinary note to ableton which is supposed to take care of the rest then.

i didn't enable the track switch yet. will try that when i'm back home.

one thing i'm worrying about is that i can select the apc20 as a control interface but only 'usb sounddevice' at the input /output fields next to it. (even though the device was installed as 'apc 20' on first use).

hanz,

thx for your hint.

activatiung the apc20 ("usb sounddevice (apc20)") for track control in the midi pane does the job.

Hi Andy,

Glad you've got it working. If it's not too much trouble, could you check the Note Mode output in MIDI-Ox? Based on my reading of the control scripts, Note Mode should actually put out notes which are different than the "normal mode" notes (they should be suited to, say, a drum rack layout). Thanks!

hanz,

just did a quick test of ~15 of the 40 main buttons. they are sending the same notes, regardless if the apc is in note-mode or not.

that's from top left to lower right:

first row: F 3 (the most left button on channel 1, the second on channel 2, ...)
second row: F#3
third row: G 3
...

the note-mode button is sending a bunch of cc values:
regardless whether it switches the note-mode on or off it sends the followig CCs
(which is an explanation for the not-so-clean behaviour when changing the midi-interface-settings within ableton)

Status - Data1 - Data2 - Channel
B8 - 10 - 00 - 9
B8 - 11 - 00 - 9
B8 - 12 - 00 - 9
B8 - 13 - 00 - 9
B8 - 14 - 00 - 9
B8 - 15 - 00 - 9
B8 - 16 - 00 - 9
B8 - 17 - 00 - 9

hope this is of any help for you

best regards,
andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for your help. Funny that the values you are reporting don't match what the APC20 Quickstart Guide says about Note Mode. With all the notes in each row having the same value, how can you control a drum rack (since Live ignores the channel)? Here's what the guide says:
NOTE MODE – Press this button to put the CLIP LAUNCH / SESSION OVERVIEW buttons into Note Mode. In Note Mode, the 8x5 grid will be divided into two equal halves with each button representing a note in Ableton Live's Drum Rack. Moving left-to-right and bottom-to-top within the left half of the grid, the buttons ascend chromatically (C1, C#1, D1, D#1, etc.) from C1 to G2. The right half of the grid ascends similarly from G#2 to D#3. (This is ideal for using with Drum Rack, but it can also be used to play melodic lines with any MIDI device.)
Best,

Hanz

interesting but you are right.

maybe the results differ if you look up these values from within a session with ableton.
(i.e. apc20 connected to ableton). didn't have the time to do that yesterday.
akay put out the midi implementation chart for the devices. guess if one ever finds the time to read it
it might give more answers:

anyway, i will have a deeper look into the communication tonight
