All good in 8.0.3, not so in 8.1.1 & 8.1.3

Post by jestermgee » Sat May 01, 2010 4:39 am

I have been testing Ableton for a while and am waiting until it works with what I need it to before I purchase. I have been VERY impressed and think it will be a great addition to rewire to my Cubase setup.

Anyway, I originally trialed 8.0.3 which I managed to get setup great with my BCF2000 and Alphatrack. It loaded all the VSTs I use regularly and I didn't notice much of an issue at all. I was so excited about the software that I bought a launchpad to play with.

I haven't bothered with the version that comes with the launchpad (because I would need more than 8 tracks for what I do and the demo is fine for my tests) but I discovered that 8.0.3 I had installed didn't have the MIDI map for the LP so I downloaded 8.1.1. All seemed fine BUT I had the following 2 issues (which are still present in 8.1.3):

VST - Speedsoft VSampler3 - This is used to play GIGA samples I have purchased and it worked great in 8.0.3 but in both the above latest versions I can load the plugin but as soon as I try and drag it, Live crashes with very little info.

VST - NI AkousticPiano - Again, worked fine in 8.0.3 but when I load it in the recent versions, it will load fine and I can move the window, BUT when I try and load a piano patch it causes the same crash.

I haven't tested all plugins but these 2 are my main plugins I use and they don't work so I have deferred thinking of getting the full version for now which kind of sux because I have the controller ready to go and have made sure it will all work for me. As soon as this crash is fixed I will be placing an order.

I am running WINXP SP3 but also tested this error on another WIN7 machine in my studio with the same result.

Not sure how useful it is but here is the MS crash report:

Was really hoping to see this fixed in 8.1.3 but now I see it isn't I decided to post. Strange that 8.0.3 worked fine. Something has been done here somewhere.

Would be great to have thie fixed but it appears there is a bigger issue here.

After rewiring Ableton to Cubase I see that VST support is disabled in Ableton anyway. This is a kick in the pants as I was hoping to do the bulk of my sequencing through Ableton because of the awesome way it allows recording and sequencing (a bit more fluent than Cubase works)

Because I own Cubase I prefer to use it for my recording of lyrics. It just has a mixer system more advanced than Ableton but the "live performance" side of things is no where near ableton.

So even if this works, it still doesn't fill my needs.

Looking around and testing things out I have found that Reaper can host VSTs and slave into Live. This may just do but then will have me doing:

REAPER >>> Live >>> Cubase

My rig should handle the load but managing projects of this complexity will be a challenge. Looks like there is a lot of testing to do. Just wish I could save these setups easily without purchasing Live. Wonder if anyone else finds that different aspects of different software would be great in a single package. This is my aim. Just have to watch where I place my cash now. Any experiences will be greatly appreciated.

8.1.1 and 8.1.3 are terribles... Gui freezes, random audio drop outs... I'm a registered user since Live 1 and I spent lot of money on that software... It's just a pity really.

I use Live 7.10 professionelly 10 shows a week and it performs great, but Live 8... Man...

Whatever...
MacPro, 10.11.6, Ableton 9.7.4, DP 7.12, Traktor Pro, UAD-1, Arturis Bundle, NI Komplete, Fender Jazz Bass, tons of different controllers

I'm kinda use to buggy software as I have been using a freeware program for years (Buzz Tracker). After a while I learned what it didn't like and lived with it because it was free and i'm no professional (though I have been a VERY long time hobbyist).

Like many here I have saved pennies, gone without the basics just to get that piece of something I really wanted. I started testing out this program and it has got me wanting to switch. Man it has just a great workflow and I have tried and ditched a HEAP of programs such as:

- FL Studio
- Reason
- Reanoize
- Psycle Tracker
- Cubase LE (though I still use this for recording vocals and live tracks because it came with my soundcard)

I'll keep an eye on this issue and see if anything develops. Damn issues, i'm battling another issue with stupid Korg Nano series drivers and lockups but that's a different matter

yes, from 8.1 ableton is a real mess.
can you recommend i go back to 7 or is 8.0.3 ok?

i notice some more software instruments are being introduced today - what happened to concentrating on fixing the current versions first? there won't be many people investing in more trouble until the old ones are eradicated.
