[Demo] Max4Live Sm4rt Knob

Post by S4racen » Sun May 09, 2010 11:17 am

Hi All,

Many of the max4live devices so far concentrate on producing, as a DJ i've tried to focus on performing live devices and so my latest device is inspired by the work of Matt Moldover and Ean Golden's work on smart knobs....

Sm4rt allows the user to draw the behaviour of a macro over the course of 127 steps, this is then controlled by one knob allowing you to for example.....

Have a filter that increases in frequency to a point and then allow the resonance to rise whilst an LFO climbs.....

Have a phazer that goes to full wet by half way and then have a beatrepeat kick in with an autopan gater climbing at the 3/4 mark....

The uses are endless merely limited by the 8 macros of a rack..... I've designed it so it will work with a rack of up to 8 chains and can control up to 3 different racks placed after the device....

As my videos in the past have been long drawn out affairs with me talking cockney throughout them the video below is a quick audio demonstration of what the device can do.....

Any questions, feedback let me have it!!

Cheers
D

looks neat..but I don't get it..
from what I can see you control the macros of a rack...(I'm guessing pre mapped)..
and I know you can't access racks device using m4l...
and I know you can't access rack mappings...

so...basically what you're doing is changing the knobs' response curve/transfer ratio ?
but it's the same setting for all params mapped to the macro no?

Yes and No, you decide the rate at which they respond and when the come in and go out, multiple times if you like....

The macros need to be pre-mapped, and whilst you can't access inside a rack you can control the macros.....

The settings for the graphs change when you change to a different chain or to a different device, therefore it's one knob to control 24 different smart effects (like Traktor i believe)

hmmmmmmmm, will give this a go, as far as i understand from your video, its sort of like creating one effect that's made of lots of little parts of other effects?

So you're stuck with the parameters you set initially, but you can still build up one crazy effect?

so... each cc value coming in can send the macro to a different place... very nice !

that looks useful. Nice to see people creating objects in Maxx4Live that I've wanted in the past... might have to get hold of it at some point.

Are m4l devices like this editable by other users, so that they can incorporate them into their own devices? Or locked by the author?

3dot yes exactly....

And the edit button means you can open it copy the code and incorporate it into your own device.....

any chance to get hands on this device? seeing your stuff closed currently and all.. it sounds like what i did so far without that accuracy by simple knob mapping. the ability to change response curves is awesome (till ableton implements something like this on their own.. like.. uhm.. in my following pic, for example)

love it.

Another great reason for m4l run time.

this is the thing that would push me to turn in demo mode and try your Sm4rt knob, as I don't own M4L [yet?].
when I first watched the video, I was a bit lost then I realized what was happening!

good point for the video, a demo is way more interesting

nice work
cheers

post the code.

the whole hush hush thing about people and their creations is such a turnoff. what's the deal with the build up? even if it doesn't work, that's all the better feedback you'll get.

Thanks for the feedback, i haven't posted as yet as it isn't finished and I made the mistake in the early days of posting things too early, negative feedback is fine by me but when it's things I already know I'd rather fix it first....

I've just got to work the smart graphs so that you can get some feedback numerically as well as visually, it's limited to 127 steps so I'm not sure if bezier curves are possible (or even relevant)....

I've got some people testing so far for me though so everyone doesn't have to act as a beta tester....

I've also got it incorporated into my isotonik device which can now control all 8 tracks stably!
