Pre-Listening, what do I need?

Post by Dustin L. » Tue May 11, 2010 3:31 am

What would be a cheap way to be able to pre-listen tracks through headphones on live? I've been messing around with an APC40, but I'm about to start dj'ing for friends/parties.

I'm not sure if it is possible with any of these (I have already from a band):

(just the fast track pro, not the software):

but if I could do it another way, what would be my cheapest solution?

Thanks,

Dustin

Do you own the audio interface you linked to, or the fast track pro? They're different - the one you linked to only has 2 outs, but the Fast Track Pro has 4.

You need 4 outputs at a minimum.

Are you on Mac or PC.

If Mac, then you can manage with a simple card as you already have be creating an 'aggregate audio device' in your audio prefs in OSX.

IF pc, you need 4 outs.

There are ways to make "aggregate audio devices" on PCs as well.

pretty sure you basically need to have an asio card with 2 stereo out (1/2 master 3/4 cue is my setup) to get it to work.
I stay away from anything except midi controllers that use USB. get a pci
Rebooting is overrated.

I have the audio interface linked (the Fast Track, not the Fast Track Pro).

It has a headphone out as well as an L and R out. Seems like that would work, but even so would I even need that much? If I assign my normal computer jack as my main out and then either one of those two outs as my headphones, would that would work too?

Thanks,

Your cheapest solution would be the Audio 2 DJ by Native Instruments.

http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/ ... udio-2-dj/

It's got exactly 2 stereo outputs (one for the master, the other to pre-listen), it's really small, and the digital<->analog converters are awesome.

Hope this helps!
