i was wondering how this echo which you hear in many english 80s piano or guitar-pop-songs could be done withing ableton live? what do you think?

original was created with the eventide harmonizer... each echo is oktavshifted, by increasing feedback you get these "milky" overtones. brian enos tracks are full of these pads.

why don't you elaborate on this 'common back in the day' psp42/l300 technique to imitate the harmonizer effect. You know what you're talking about, right ?






As for OP's query, I'm 99.9% sure he's referring to a function of the eventide harmonizer h3000
which the soundtoys fellas worked on, they're ex-eventide. The cyrstallizer isn't cheap, but it sounds lush. They offer a 30 day demo of their effect bundle. Try it.
You could check out audio damage's very affordable discord 2 as well, which is based on the same effect.


as for what tunes in the 80s employed the effect, well leeds should know. It wouldn't be like him to make shit up.

Where the Streets Have No Names & In Gods Country by U2. The Joshua Tree in general has lots of Eventide harmonizer on it. Not sure if that's the effect the OP is talking about. Crystalizer is nice btw. Edit: I got to use a real Eventide in a studio couple years back (borrowed from the engineers friend, a U2 cover band guy who was obsessed). Sounded amazing.

I'm talking back end of the 70s and early 80s, when mostly units by Lexicon and AMS-Neve were the common reverb and modulation effects, together with either tape induced ADT/flanging, or chorus.

An example being the track 'I Ran' by A Flock Of Seagulls, which used the Lexicon L300 and 42 delay unit.

Eventide's harmonizers were not a big fixture in studios until the mid 1980s. Yamaha's SPX multi-FX units were also popular from about 1986 onwards.

Here's another example of Lexicon PSP42 and (this time) an L480 reverb, with a Boss PS-2 pitch shifter.

The guitarists also used Boss CH-3 chorus and there are supposedly 20 layers of guitars. It took 2 days to get all the delays to get on beat/be in the right time.

If I'm talking out of my arse SOME of the time, that's preferable to ALL of the time, like some people. If I talk without saying anything, I'm taking your lead dum - your words regularly say and mean nothing, hence having to use random google pics or pithy insults.

Without the OP actually posting some examples, we don't what he is referring to. The tracks I posted in my opinion have a crystalline echo sound and both of them do not use eventide harmonizers - they use delay, reverb and mod FX, pretty much the same idea, except not in one harmonizer box. I worked with H3000s for years so I know what they're capable of, and they were only produced from 1988 onwards.
