Re: What's up with the Props???????????
the octo rex player looks pretty raw to me.
All I have to do is spend some time converting thing to rex files and just load up a bunch of these things and reason will start to be a pretty good performance daw.
I know it will not be quite as good as ableton, BUT I'll TAKE STABILITY ANY DAY of the weak.
I'm guessing we will get midi out with record 1.5
some new synths
Can't wait for for the next peak at what's new....It's like X-mas spread out over this next week

Of course they won't give up the profitability of Recycle as a seperate app and you already can edit the slice points in Dr. Rex. You can move the start pos forward for any slice but you can't modify or create the .rx2 file itself.JEpic wrote:Octo Rex looks cool, but I really wish they would just build Recycle into the Dr. Rex, at least limited functionality like being able to edit slice points.
Re: What's up with the Props???????????
I had Reason / Record for awhile and sold the licenses as I needed to limit my toolset. The buss compression is really nice in Record. But to me they HAVE to improve audio editing in Record and have a "slice to NN-XT or Dr Rex" type deal....Record's time stretch algo is sick but there's really nothing cool you can do with the file but stretch it. To me that's a must.
Some kind of extension of Maalstrom where you can load your own waveforms seems like a no brainer...but I agree their synths are kind of meh.
Regardless I'm much happier in Ableton as long you give it a year gestation period after a new release
(no crashes in 8 yet but i just got it last week)

I'll have to check that last part out, but as far as the first part that would make sense, except when was working at GC only 2 stores in the district (12 in total if I remember correctly) had a copy of Recycle. When I needed to get a copy of it for a customer, my product specialist simply told me good luck! GC simply did not move enough copies of it to keep it in stock.
Personally, I feel the biggest failing of Recycle/Record is the lack of drag and drop capability you get with a program like Ableton. If they really want to compete (IMO) you should be able to record that vocal or guitar track, add some slice points, drop it into your Rex and mangle it endlessly. Or grab sections of your drum track and throw them into your Redrum and add some machine like fills and breaks to your song.
If they really want to compete in the live market (which is what the Dr. Octo Rex appears to do) they need to cut out as many needs to stop the flow as possible. A competitive product (or bundle whatever) is going to going to show more long term profit than depending on the sales of a product that hasn't received a significant upgrade in 6 years.
Propellerhead needs to realize they have the oportunity to capture, or at least distract a large portion of the Ableton user base (myself not included) that are disgruntled with stability issues. Stability is something that Propellerhead is recognized for, but the're not going to win the long haul without increasing flow, whether that means cutting or adding functionality.
Rant over, personally I love both pieces of software, but I stick to Ableton myself, while my co producers are strict Reason users.
EDIT: Agree about Maelstrom wave forms as well.

I agree that props have a window of opportunity to snag some of live's unhappy people. But with most people who like live for the work flow will not replace live with reason. I think of live an a recycle on Steroids. Many folks just use it as a scratch pad for ideas and tweaking audio samples.
I feel that live and reason go well together when live 8 does not crash.
As of yet nothing can replace live, but I can guarantee that someone is working hard to take on live's market share for performance software and quick work flow.

what?
am i on to something here?
didn't you test synplant before it came out?
Edit.. never mind i dont think that was you..
It wasn't me, but I remember this topic came up once before. It's an argument that a lot of hardcore Reason users seem to lose their minds about. Actually, I think anti aliasing for their synths would be a good thing.

I bet you tomorrow they will be hooting and hollering on how they have modelling modes for the mpc 60, sp1200, asr10, sk1,e6400 , etc
Re: What's up with the Props???????????
I'll take you up on that bet. I bet it's another improvement on some other instrument/interface. Today Rex tomorrow xxxxxxx?v00d00ppl wrote:I bet you tomorrow they will be hooting and hollering on how they have modelling modes for the mpc 60, sp1200, asr10, sk1,e6400 , etc

good point. Maybe they wrote an auto defect code that can utilize your keyboard of drum pad controlleras a way of writing steps for their new step sequencer.tlennon wrote:I'll take you up on that bet. I have a feeling they won't do vst support though .

Re: What's up with the Props???????????
reason is a great teaching tool. i find students gel with topics like signal flow better in reason than most other apps.
i rarely use it for producing though, live took that job over years ago.
one area i do use it in though is when playing live. all of my keyboard presets (mainly synth bass) are saved as combinator patches. i save all of the patches in a folder for a gig and with one button press on my novation keyboard the next preset is up and happening.
it's much easier to see whats going on at a glance versus using a rack and to be honest it's more stable too.

Re: What's up with the Props???????????
I don't understand why people are confused as to whether it's going to be Reason 5 or not....the headline clearly says "Reason 5 and Record 1.5" so take it for granted this is what it's going to be.
VST support...never happen. It would make Reason/Record less stable.
Midi Out....possible but would likely be in the form of a paid add-on, much like Record is to Reason.
New drum machine/effects/etc....boring. It could do with a full set of instrument building tools, want a new drum machine.....build one....need some new effects...build them....and all with the stability offered by a closed platform.
Recycle inside Reason.....would be good, the Props are the only DAW coders that don't offer this as standard....instead you have to pay approx 200 euro's for the priviledge....making the entire package even more than Live Suite....ouch!
Synths incorporating an anti-alias mode.....about blinking time....their synths are weak in comparison to many plugs. I know they can sound good but presently, they're only "so so".
Innovative new approach.....Reason 4 wasn't, Record wasn't, i'm sure this update will add some much needed tools to their arsenal but innovation is getting harder and harder for everyone (including Ableton and they're my favourite), so expect quite a lot of copied ideas.
