Can't locate Kontact 4 programs in ableton's plug ins

Post by ziondave » Wed Jun 09, 2010 4:12 pm

Hi,

Ok, so I've been running ableton with Reason 4 for quite a while and just rewiring the instruments into ableton, that's all working fine. Today I got Native Instruments' Kontact 4 and installed Guitar Rig, Pro53 and Absynth, however when I tried to find them in the plug in devices window I couldn't locate the plug ins. I had also installed BFD a while back and whenever I go into the plug in window it says it can't find the BFD folder. BFD has never worked so today I deleted all the BFD files, yet I'm still having the same problem. I'm running it all on a 1st generation, intel macbook pro, with OS X Leopard 10.5. Have never really used plug ins before so maybe there's something I'm not doing? Would be very grateful for any help.

Thanks,

dave

in preferences -> file/folder -> click rescan plugins. the default path (where the plugs should have automatically been installed), is library -> audio -> plugins, then 'components' for audio units and 'vst' for vst.

I tried rescanning, and it goes straight to that folder, but when I click it it says it's already selected, yet, I can't see any of the plug-ins I've installed. There's no list of available devices in the plug-in folder. I'm only guessing there's something I haven't done properly in the installation process?

Thanks for your help though.

the plugs may have also installed in the user directory (users -> username -> library -> plugins -> components/vst). find the path in finder, then follow that for the 'vst plug-in custom'. if you confirm that the directory is pointing to the correct place, i'd try installing a free vst or two to see if you can narrow down the problem to the NI install.

also (sorry if this sounds obvious), make sure you look in the correct browser within live. the one with rectangle icon is for live's built in devices, the one that looks like a two pronged wall plug is for third party plugs.

Ha ha... I'm not that bad!!! Cheers though, I'll have a better look later and maybe try installing a free vst, although I've been trying to keep clutter to a minimum as my hard drive's nearly full. Can you recommend any good free synth plug-ins?

Thanks for the help :)

Ok, so I eventually found the plug ins alias folder, which was in with my old pro tools folder. I selected custom VSTs and went to this destination, at which point ableton crashed. When I tried to start it up again it gets as far as "scanning custom VSTs" while booting up but then crashes again. I've gone back through the preferences to delete the preference files, which allows me to open ableton again but if I try to find the plug ins again it crashes. How do I know which plug-ins are making it crash? This is really annoying.

Why would VST or AU plugins be in a PT folder? PT uses RTAS...

the protools folder is most definitely not where the plug ins should be. if you directed the installer to put them there, it'd definitely be worth reinstalling in the proper location. also, run NI service center to make sure your versions are up to date.

Ya, that's where they were, I don't know if it's because pro-tools was the first DAW I had installed on this machine? It was under, Applications> Digidesign> Protools> Plug-Ins Alias. I eventually found one file that conflicted with ableton, Elastic Audio.dpm, so I deleted that and now it's not crashing anymore, but I still can't get it to recognize the plug-ins.

And, no, It's Komplete 4, so it's not up to date. Is this why it won't recognize them?

check for the most recent dot update (e.g. 2.0 to 2.3.1) of whatever full versions you have. your registration page at the NI site has everything you need. and check with tech support about compatibility of komplete 4 with leopard.
