Post by leighbeynon » Sat Jun 05, 2010 3:55 pm

im looking for an all rounder really, something with some great classic sounds

piano / keys sounds and synth leads

i realise you programme alot of the patchs to get your sound, but something with a good jump off point would be great

something i can get some nice deep sounds from like this these

For bass, I'd say go with Rob Papens SubBoomBass. As far as pianos, PianoTeq (which I can't say I've used as RP SBB) has been getting great reviews and the sounds I've heard on their website seem pretty sweet.

Hope that helps

yeah ive just heard some demos of subboom bass, sounds good but seems to be geared towards hip hop, dubstep and drum& bass, but i did hear some nice synth basslines that would work in house,

the pianoteq is amazing, im just wondering if it would be better to use a sampler for rhodes etc
or a synth, alot of people swear by the sampler sound banks

If you're looking for specific instrument sounds you might be better off using samples.

I like zebra just cause I can draw my own wave from the start...and make pretty much anything I want.

I have most of the Arturia synths. The Jupiter 8 is nice but I personally wouldn't recommend it for bass, I think it sounds a bit thin and is better suited for leads and pads. It has a snappy sound though (like most of the Roland stuff), but I think it just lacks the oomph that you want from a synth for a focus on bass patches.

for more sonic range you might prefer a modern, non-emulation synth for your purposes. Rob Papen Predator is really good for bass, I use it all the time. Zebra, as stated above, is very versatile. Recently I've gotten deeper into my Waldorf Largo and it's really starting to impress me.

But if you do specifically want an emulated analog synth, my favorites from Arturia are the ARP2600 (seriously big and gritty analog sound) and the Prophet 5 (straight forward but true to the original and great sound, I actually do a lot of synth bass patches on this one -- PLUS it comes with the Prophet VS emulation, so this is really two synths for one, and the VS rocks!).

hope this is some help!

U-he ACE
Recommend from the bottom of my heart :)

try the demo, and if you decide buying it is inexpensive

it is quite CPU hungry (I often freeze its tracks after composing) but it is worth it

cheers

I think the JP8V has some excellent bass potential and have used it on several tracks for bass. You can phatten up sounds with unison up to 32 and the inbuilt chorus and automating cutoff and resonance makes it cut through. It also has that great 80s 'West End Girls' type bass synth to a tee.

Zebra 2.5 and Massive are probably the best two all rounder multi-purpose synths though, Arturia's synths capture vintage synths well but older analogue vintage synths don't do multi purpose synthesis well. The Prophet V is probably the most versatile Arturia synth, because you get both the analogue subtractive synthesis of the Prophet V and the wavetable synthesis of the Prophet VS and you an combine them as a hybrid.
