You're not off track. I think LQM mat have missed my points about accepting and applying constructive criticism.
dhilsabeck wrote: Kudos to those who are brave enough to post their music and accept constructive criticism. This may be a an integral part of your creative process and you may learn a lot and it can take your music to a higher level of finish. However it is important that your own judgement trumps any other advice that you don't deem as sound, especially with subjective elements.
To which LQM responded.
leedsquietman wrote:So your advice is stay a noob and don't worry about improving your skills and learning to be self-sufficient ?

That it's OK for everyone else to think you're substandard (or assume you're lazy or untalented), so long as you like your own music and remain blissfully ignorant of other's opinion ?
When I say you can choose to not accept someone's subjective opinions, I meant that from the bottom of my heart. It doesn't mean remain ignorant and let your music be substandard. Good advice is invaluable. It merely means that you shouldn't accept that there's simply a right or wrong way to present your creative work based on one dude's random totally subjective opinion.

And self sufficiency is fine and all, but some of us are the opinion that there are specialists that can help make your music better. Anyone with a basic set up computer and free software (or less) can write, record, arrange, mix and master their own music but it doesn't mean it's a good idea. Some things, in my opinion, like mastering for example, are best left to experienced and talented folks who specialize in this specific field who can offer impartial, scientific, and objective perspective that will make your music sound much better. Plus, you can get it done for not that much money these days. If anything, consider it a treat to yourself for working so hard on the other elements.

Thanks for clarification, I was a bit confused to your original post.

I agree with much of what you said. I agree with your view on Mastering, although I have done Mastering courses and think it is a good skill to know about and learn, even if you pass it on to someone else - I do my own Mastering because I'm comfortable with it and have learned skills, but if I had a budget I would pass it on to someone else.

I think though that using a DAW program, mixing is something which you should strive to improve for yourself. In bygone days you had songwriters, recording engineers, mixing engineers, producers etc. Nowadays, the home/project studio brings these capabilities onto home users for next to nothing, and is one reason why smaller and medium studios are going out of business (as someone laid off I know only too well about this). I think if you're going to submit music, you should have some of these skills or be working to improve them, UNLESS you happen to have a budget to employ others to do it for you. What you post reflects on you and if you have a great track but terrible mixing, people will have a distorted opinion on your music. Whether that bothers you or not is I guess, a personal thing which varies from person to person but especially for anyone wanting to get a career in the business, you can't afford to have your work viewed as substandard. If you're just doing music for fun, this may not be so important.

How the fuck do you judge what good and bad dubstep is, anyway?

When I fart, I know it's a good one when it's incredibly fucking rancid and I have to leave the room and my cats are dead.

Is judging dubstep like that?

Fucking awful. AWFUL.

:D

How did you judge what was good and bad when you blew up on the quality of the Link Your Music section ?

Probably the same formula. This message will self destruct in 10 seconds...

Well, that's easy. Because dubstep is basically in a whole new category of awful. It's not often when a form of music comes along that fully manages to redefine the word SHIT, but dubstep is definitely that.

At least the kids post their stuff, even if some of us old men find it horrible.

dubstep was made up by teenagers in london, so don't expect all wisdom of music production being built in.

most of it might be horrible or boring to some of us, but at least they pushed the whole music industry into BASS. That's cool when teenagers invent something and the industry follows. popmusi wouldn't work without this engine.
