The stupid thing is they do offer an unlimited data plan for the iPhone.
Eh? I thought they got rid of that option with the new phone. Only if you were previously on the old unlimited plan could you keep an unlimited data plan. Otherwise all newcomers to the iPhone are stuck with limited plans. Can you show me where I'm wrong?
I think you're right about having to have a previous iPhone. Yay for fanboys!! This is probably why you're told if you don't sign up for unlimited data now you won't be able to do it later.
Given that, I'm wondering if they also had an unlimited plan for the iPad but killed it recently too.

No unlimited plan for the iPad either, correct.

I don't think I will buy a laptop now for a long time. The 3 year old mac book (2ghz core 2 duo 4G RAM) i have is sufficient for playing out my stuff (once the set is consolidated)

I know there isn't one now but I'm thinking that possibly there was one for the first couple weeks after release and then after analyzing how many people were using it they said "fuck that" and killed it as an option.
If nothing else this is admitting their network isn't up to par for mass usage.

When Verizon gets into the game, it'll be interesting to see if they'll still offer an unlimited plan - which I believe they do now.
So far I've yet to hear of any competitors following AT&T's *ahem*lead*ahem*.

I don't see why Verizon would offer an unlimited plan, they don't offer it with their MiFi, the largest plan is a 5GB/Month cap. All these companies, home internet providers as well, are just DYING to get everybody off of unlimited plans. Take a cue from the banks, the money is in overage charges.

Here's some fuel for the Apple haters. I bought my iPhone for $299 and based on local tax the tax should be about $30, but I was charged $67 in tax. Apparently they are charging you tax based on buying the phone without a plan which makes the phone more expensive and it's legal. Fucked. Up.

Looks like the sweaty palm contingency is attempting a class action lawsuit against Apple for not allowing them to return the new iPhone without a 10% restock fee.
dum just came a double shot.

Oh, that's right. Forgot about that 5GB cap. That was the cause for some stink a while back - when they had labeled it 'unlimited'.
But again, all this will be moot when the national wifi network is turned on.

This may or may not be a stupid question, but if you have a GPS app does it still work when you are out of wifi or 3g range?
My friend had a star app on his non-iPhone cell this past weekend when we were in bumfuck with no signal in range and it stil tracked the stars with his movement.

^ my understanding is that the its a GPS receiver. meaning that it receives the satellite information... not cellular signal mind you. So I think it works even when you're out of wifi and cellular range. Not 100% on this, but pretty sure. If you voyage to the center of the earth RMV and if the quality and positioning is anything like the antennae...

Really? You sell me a product that does not work at all like it is supposed to, then tell me I have to spent 15% the price of the phone to get it to work the way it should? I'm counting down the minutes until the first class action lawsuit is filed. Those bumpers should be free if they are required to get the phone to work.
So how long did I have to wait?
