Launchpad midi question
Hi and thanks in advance
Is it possible to program the launchpads buttons to be any midi note you like
I want it to be diatonic thirds horizontally and corresponding scales in the columns
I also would like the root and fifth to stay lit up
I plan on using this as a keyboard
I haven't been able to find any of this info out in the user guides

Re: Launchpad midi question
If you don't use the Ableton Control Surface script that is inbuilt you could use Bome's MIDI translator to do that, or you could try a Max4Live patch that did the same, but there is a steep learning curve there.

Re: Launchpad midi question
I was thinking (sorry to hijack), is there a way to switch to different modes when it's not activated as a control surface ? I mean, how are these modes being "triggered" ? Simply a note message or CC ? (I've read the programmer's reference but couldn't find an answer).

Re: Launchpad midi question
Yep the Launchpad uses note messages. If you dig around the forum there is info somewhere about how it all works, i've been quite happy using the control surface method so haven't looked too far into it.
I'm sure the forums over at Maxforlive.com will have some more info too.

Re: Launchpad midi question
you can do that with the Automap Server, you just need to set up at least one Automap MIDI channel.ambientidm wrote:Hi and thanks in advance

Re: Launchpad midi question
You can set that up without using M4L or automap:
You need to make a midi channel and fill it with clips containing your desired notes. Then assign each clip to one button of the launchpad, following your scheme.
The instruments you want to play with the launchpad need to their inputs set to "midi from" this channel
Then you make another midi channel routed to the launchpad, containing a clip looping the notes the launchpads buttons for roots and fifths. This will make those buttons lit up.

Re: Launchpad midi question
Yep. There is no native editing capacity on the launchpad, so an intermediate translation stage would be necessary. The different pages on the launchpad control script are accessed via midi notes being pressed whilst the launchpad is using the control script. If you want to get further into this I would recommend consulting the python data that Hans Petrov hosts on his framework blog.
