M4L "Device Store"

Post by hcaz » Mon Jul 12, 2010 9:40 pm

Not sure if this has been discussed already. According to C74's site, they'll be anouncing plans for "standalone" M4L devices at some point later this year. I suppose it depends on M4L's sales figures (obviously not allowing standalones forces users to buy M4L just to use devices made with it), but I think it would be a better model to have a "device store" similar to Apple's app store for the iphone. Historically, C74 has been able to charge so much for Max amongst free alternatives because it's an extremely stable platform for building real applications that can then be sold for profit. Pluggo was just one example of this. It seems to me users could be taking much greater advantage of M4L than has been done so far and I wonder if there's some trepidation due to the inability to create standalones. I think it would be more profitable for both Ableton and C74 to allow M4L users to compile standalones and sell them via a consolidated location, taking advantage of Live's large user base, for which Ableton could charge something like Apples 30% cut. Just a suggestion; it'd certainly be great for me as a developer.

"The first release of Max for Live does not prevent users from opening Max devices. This is likely to discourage selling devices for the time being. Our plans for paid and free content distribution will be announced in 2010."
