Is it proved that Live runs faster on Windows 7 than OS X

Post by flowdesigner » Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:11 pm

I read on the RME homepage that OS X is a faster OS than Windows 7, so I wonder why Live should perform better on Windows.

Robert Henke use OS X, right?

from the Ableton Live forum Benchmark thread this is what got me thinking:

1. Ableton Live CPU Meter: 8% with Windows 7 (same 1 computer)
1. Ableton Live CPU Meter: 17% with OSX 10.6 (same 1 computer)
1. Ableton Live CPU Meter: 23% with OSX 10.6.3 (same 1 computer)
2. Desktop: Custom HackMac
3. OS: I settled on OSX 10.6, as I'm a Mac guy
4. Ableton Live version: 8.1.3
5. CPU Make, model and speed: i7 920 @3.32GHz
6. Amount of RAM: 6GB
7. Soundcard : onboard
8. Hard disk drive speed: 7200RPM
9. Number of playback tracks: 8

Double the Performance on Windows 7....

I read that red roses grow faster than white ones.

I also read that computers that aren't identical are made with different parts and specs.

If one of those statements is wrong, which one is correct?

+1

Hackintoshes don't count. My wife's "slower" macbook is faster and snappier than my "faster" hackintosh.

Maybe a bit more even to use a real mac, and compare it to win7 with bootcamp as mac laptops are known to be good windows laptops, whereas hackintoshes can have all sorts of funny latencies, especially since the os has to interface via EFI emulation.
Live relevant things: Suite 12, MacBook M1 Max, RME UFX II (kext drivers), Push 1

yeah, it would probably be more even to run both Operating Systems on Apple's hardware and see which is faster.

and a blind taste test is easier if you keep one eye open.

I use Live on windows vista and OSX 10.6 i think it is... ill check on that and repost when i get home

anyway... i use windows vista on bootcamp and it runs much slower on windows, i also get sound issues (that's from bootcamp though, not windows itself)... When I run it in OSX it's a little more stable (less error messages), but yet seems to crash more often... I think running OSX on a custom desktop will cause issues... so comparing the two will never be a legit comparison- this is because OSX is built with the hardware that is literally welded into apple computers... i notice that this keeps OSX as a much more solid and stable operating system, and the separation from the operating system to hardware in pc can cause a lot more problems... most of the time with mac there is one driver for all macs... for pc, you gotta get all types of different drivers that work for your particular situation... I dont have any solid proof that live runs better on mac, but just does for me.

RME state that OSX Leopard and above has better USB support than XP/Vista, dunno if they have the tests for Win7?
It's splitting hairs to a degree though. If there is any advantage OSX has over Windows as of now that will probably diminish when USB3 hits.
