I say "One of each!"
Seriously, I have both, but one advantage of the larger that hasn't been mentioned (at least if you're talking Axiom) is sliders and buttons to go with them. The 49 has faders that the 25 doesn't. So, more controls are immediately available.

I think the 25 can do what you want it to do most of the time.
Unless you are a good piano player (personal opinion) you don't need a lot of keys. I have a 49 key keyboard but I have a feeling I would be completely alright with a 25 key with remote controls etc., ala MPK25. Octave switch buttons are a beautiful thing.

Re: 25 or 49 key controller?
I sold my 49 key controller and 37-key synth because they were too bulky for my studio and for travel (less room for acoustic instruments). It's all personal preference, though.
You don't need a keyboard with more keys than 25 for more complex melodies or other such nonsense as has been suggested.
I do almost all of my composing on acoustic string, wind, and percussion instruments, so a 25-key suits me fine for when I want to add synth parts. However, If you do most or all of your composition on synths using a keyboard, I'd say get more than 25 keys

Re: 25 or 49 key controller?
The point about most 49 key controllers is spot on... although I don't think an axiom 49 would be 100 quid better than the 25key o2 - nanokontrol combo I use. I am a really mediocre keyplayer, so I could probably get away with using a padkontrol really.

Yes 37 keys is definitely enough for keyboard novices. I have a Line 6 KB37.
Re: 25 or 49 key controller?
If it has knobs and drum pads and stuff... then the 25 will do... I have an MPK25 which is nice to take to gigs to use as an effects controller (controls Artillery)... although I use it at home to play my synth lines, I could use a larger keyboard... but
If I need more keys, I'll get that one $90 m-audio keyboard that has no knobs or pads, just a mod wheel pitch bend and keys... so if you are getting a full midi controller w/ all the stuff then a 25 key will do and it's compactness will be nice so that if you do NEED a bigger keyboard you can have one that is JUST keys, and save all the midi controls for a small keyboard that is more portable.
