Mine has to be the bass. I love writing swingy melodic baselines followed closely by deep lush pads
I dislike programming drums the most. Making loops is ok but adding variation is a chore for me

Re: Which instrument do you like Programming/composing the most?
Good topic. Bass or a lush pad is usually what gives me the most inspiration for the track. Doing the drums feels like a chore sometimes (prob cos I'm shit at them lol). I always find getting a lead you like and works in the mix is abit of a pain.

Drum definitely, I can sit at my Machinedrum for hours coming up with weird beats.

Rave, I hate drum programming as you do. Too time consuming for me. That's why I use loops and modify them a little to make them sound less robotic. I like programming Pads my loved instrument is Operator followed by Analog. If only my guitar could output synth sounds...

Bass, bass, bass. I love funky, swinging basslines. And I'm also a big fan of melody, although it's harder to come up with a good lead melody than a good bassline.

Ukulele.
No, I'm serious. It's the best for songwriting! (not so hot for phat beatz)

Agreed. If it sounds good on a Ukulele it will sound good on anything.Simbosan wrote:Ukulele.

The art of soundwriting is sadly lost in most musical instances.
Nice tunes by the way. You certainly know how to rock a ukulele.

I hear you, so to speak. That wankery drives me nuts. I often leave the drums out completely.Rave wrote:I dislike programming drums the most. Making loops is ok but adding variation is a chore for me
I bought Machinedrum to help the cause, but I've been using it as a neat step sequencer for my evolver and to create some synthetic buddhist temple environments.
Who invented "beat" anyway? What a moron. There's always rhythm in music, no need to point it out in ridiculously excessive amounts.

i like to compose melody+harmonies.
i like to arrange strings and brass.
i like drum programming.
i don´t like making exf sounds.
i don´t like to stretch out dancy arrangements out of a short part.
i don´t like to rec and edit vocals.
anyway i do it all

My APC40 has transformed into 16 step sequencer for beats, bass and samples with so I can now get all the 'boring' bits out of the way 'live' - so much more fun and quick so I can get on with the other stuff - lyrics, guitar, vocal melody etc
Live itself is the brilliant instrument at the heart of it though.

Re: Which instrument do you like Programming/composing the most?
I come up with the main melody first, and then make beat, both of which I enjoy. The baseline comes next but can be difficult because it's so central. By then I often have a vocal melody also (but few lyrics). My favorite things are the counterpoint melodies that follow. My least favorite are finishing the last 20% of the arrangement, working on transitions, and finishing lyrics. Love mixing though, oh to be a mix engineer.

Tbh.. it seems to vary daily for me..
I can honestly enjoy every aspect on a good day and hate every aspect on a bad one
Somedays things flow, others, meh...
I'm really digging working with Nerve now for drum programming and lots more too ie, bass, vocal cuts, fx hits etc..
One thing I do love though most of the time is sample mangling/editing/rearranging/generally mashing up and resampling it all.. Great fun as well as POWERFUL

Re: Which instrument do you like Programming/composing the most?
drums - bass - harmony
in that order or in reverse...
when I start from the drums... then obviously the bass will set the progression..
and when I start from the harmony.. then the bass sets the riddim/groove..
either way.. I never start with the bass... but it's ALWAYS the anchor on my stuff..
