Live 8.1.5 - un-analysed mp3s freeze app

Post by Angstrom » Mon Sep 06, 2010 1:47 pm

MP3s have become unusable for me in Live 8.1.5

Case : when either dragging in 6mb un-analysed MP3 to session or arrange, or importing via the enter key (select a track and then select an MP3, then press return - to import the MP3). Also when previewing an MP3 in Live 8.1.5

in any of these cases the application freezes, GUI drawing stops and the application is unrsponsive for at least 10 seconds

Image
Comparative testing Results:

Live 8.1.1 Works fine
time taken to analyse and then drop always less than 1.5 seconds, times range between 0.5 seconds and 2 second. The "no drop" mouse icon shows, but at least it's only for a second. GUI is fully responsive during this time.

Live 8.1.5 Barely works
time taken to analyse, and then drop ranges between 8 seconds and 16 seconds, although most usual on my 10 6 mb tests was a 10 second wait time.
If this is a drag action the (/) "no drop" mouse icon shows for that time

during this time the application is frozen to interaction, Window Title bar reads "Live 8 - (not responding)" with no further GUI drawing at all - meaning all Live menus, tracks instruments and title-bars are in pale grey with no text and unresponsive.

Previewing
the same happens when I select an MP3 to preview , the 'headphones' are active, and an un-analysed mp3 selected. Pressing the right arrow, or simply selecting an unanalysed MP3 starts preview

In Live 8.1.5 the application locks up for ten seconds. Windows title bar reads "Live 8 - (Not responding)"
The Picture shows the situation.

I will track back through the previous Live versions to see when this occurred.
I have 8.1.1, 8.1.3 , 8.1.4 and 8.1.5 installed
8.1.1 is fine, 8.1.5 is terrible

I will report back

Actually - that was easy
it all works fine in Live 8.1.4 , I can preview a 6mb Mp3 in less than a second in 8.1.4

A similar file takes over 10 seconds of terror in 8.1.5

So the problem occurred in Live 8.1.5

EDIT

it also exists in 8.1.6 b5, reported in appropriate forum where it is more likely to get love.

Yep I got some time and was messing with live 8.1.5 and the new beta and your right. I made it crash wiithout fail everytime I tried to even scroll through and tried to pick out a track.

Your correct that I've never had this problem with 8 until now

I sent a similar bugreport yesterday. I was previewing some files while others were analysed and got a crash with L8.15 and vista.

This is what they told me, maybe it works for you (haven't tried it yet):

"Please try this:
- close Live
- delete the "Preferences.cfg" , "Undo.cfg", "CrashDetection.cfg" and "Template.als" and "Undo.cfg" files (if available) from
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live 8.1.5\Preferences

- delete the content of these two folders:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Live 8.1.5\Database
and
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Ableton\Cache\Cache\Web

- restart Live 8.1.5"

Angstrom and Headrick: Is Quicktime installed on your machines or does Live decode using the DirectX extensions?

#1thelark: If you got a crash, then the problem is not really similar.

Hi Dom,
quicktime is installed on my machine, I'm not sure what QT component gets used in the decode, but my \QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTimeMPEG.qtx is version 7.66.71.0

note that versions of Live up to 8.1.3 still work perfectly, but from 8.1.4 onwards it works "differently" (horribly)

I've reported the issue in the beta of 8.1.6 b5 here

Similar thing was happening to me too. I had 8.1 and couldn't load some songs at all but then I installed Quick time and then I could. And then the problems started, Live freezes on random occasions while loading an unanalysed songs (sometimes works with no problem though, but it eventually happens). Tried updating to 8.13 & 8.14 but it keeps happening. Analysed songs work fine.

My guess is that it has something to do with Quick Time...

I'm not entirely sure it's the same issue though, because my older versions of Live still work fine (everything up to and including 8.1.4), and I'm sure they are using the exact same QT libraries.

It's baffling.
I'm blaming that damn scratchy DJ software integration they are working on.
whatever it's called.

I can ensure you: That´s not it.
We´re investigating what´s causing this on your machine.

Thanks Christian, that's reassuring.
