Using Ms Pinky as a VST for scratchin in my Ableton Live set

Post by mrsakitumi » Sat Sep 11, 2010 12:56 pm

Hi,

thought I'd share this clip with you, basically using Ms Pinky as VST in my Ableton Live set for
timecode vinyl scratching.
I have the plugin mapped to USER 2 of my Launchpad, so I can access it at anytime for scratching.
I don't rate myself as a turntablist, but I do enjoy the odd wikki wikki texture.

Gotta love Ms. Pinky. I'm using it heavily in my new live set, sampling stuff off Pinky VST into a Looper. So much fun.

@rbmonosylabik please post what you do with ms pinky. be cool to see.
@$99 Ms pinky is a much more cost effective time code scratching option.
and it was originally intended for video scratching, which i'm definitely going to venture into.
the bonus is, as a vst plugin, i can jam my set in Live and still have access to it.
with traktor scratch, serato etc you need seperate self contained apps and soundcards (well now that bridge is on the horizon)
I just like that I can access it within the full power of a Live set.
going to get M4L soon, so the avenues with Ms Pinky are just the tip of the iceberg for me right now.

Some studio recordings of tracks from the set I've been working on. I'll be playing it out soon.

This one is from a very early version of the live set. Sounds much better now.

thanks for the links mister.
nice beats.
I like how your setup is (from the video it looks like you've really sidelined your laptop/machine)
so it makes your show look more like just an mpc and turntable style.
that's an mpd 32?
how are you changing your files for Ms Pinky? Are you doing it manually, or do you have a setup that can select through
options?

freeze a clip and a wav of the clip shows up in the 'processed' folder. browse to the folder with the pinky plug in to use it.

Yep, it's an MPD32. Depending on the track it does different stuff, launch scenes, one shots, beat juggle using a rack built using a delay (http://www.msbkonline.com/?p=229). I'm really loving that piece of gear, it's been great for getting the laptop off view, though I still have to look at it for certain things, like changing Ms Pinky files, but that's pretty quick and can be done between tracks.

I run Ms Pinky in absolute mode and set up the audios so the vinyl behaves as a skipless record. I make them with a Live template with the tempo at 133.33 BPM so each bar is a record turn, then I loop each sound I need for a minute so they roughly line up with the grooves on the record. I had some trouble with clicks when dropping the needle when using them as aiff/wav, so I convert them to 320 kbps mp3s, which work great.

@ rbmonosylabik: that's an interesting workflow, never thought of approaching Ms Pinky like that (in absolute mode).

I used to use a Roland SP 808, which then became a SP 606 for gigs.
Since migrating my set to Live I did miss that "sampler" type feel, so I integrated the PadKontrol for MPC style jamming.
Launchpad just for clip launching etc.
Thanks Tone deft for the input, that'll work really well for live on the fly stuff at gigs as well,
where you can also route an MC/instrumentalist, record clips and quickly scratch bits on the spot.

Just picked up Shure M44-7's today:) at a wicked price, which I couldn't pass up. I've read that they track well.
Still using Ms Pinky gen3 vinyls at the moment. Are you using gen4's? Are they worth the upgrade?

Any of you guys try the max for live version of Ms.Pinky? You can trigger different audio files in clips to be scratched. Pretty cool. Can't say I've had any time to play with it, but it seems like they're making some good improvements in the M4L version, as a group effort.

It does look amazing, I only wish it could be done without needing M4L (or that there was a cheaper runtime). I've been meaning to look into what the possibilities of doing something similar are with the VST, but haven't got round to it, but will do soon, I promise.

I only have one Gen 3 vinyl and haven't really put it to the test, I usually go straight for the black Gen 4, which feels great for scratching. The Pink/Black vinyl is heavier, which I think works better for mixing.

...

It could be possible do something similar from outside Live with something like LiveOsc and some audio routing too but why not to talk about this at Pinky forums to concentrate efforts?

Forums are also for this not only for bug report...
