Best Human Like Drum VST?

Post by Pasha » Sat Sep 18, 2010 9:59 am

Yesterday I was puzzled by a friend's question:

Which plug-in acts closer to a real drummer? Can it not only follow tempo and match style but also insert little 'human'
nuances, accents, automatically?
My answer was that such a thing does not exists and later... later I decided to ask here.
Genre could be Fusion, Funk, Smooth Jazz or Rock, Hard Rock.

Try Jamstix - http://www.rayzoon.com. Once you get to learn how it works, it's the next best thing to having a real drummer in your studio.

Thank you. It looks like it's Windows only anything similar for Mac OS X?

I've just gone mac and have been looking for exactly what you're after

I had Jamstix on Windows and have contacted them. They will be porting to Mac but not in the near future.

I haven't done much searching yet but doesn't seem to be an equivalent for Mac.

Cheers

I use some of Lives' session drums..
and some of the kits in Battery and Kontakt are good as well..
their more of a mess to get around and tweak than the 'dedicated' acoustic drums vsts..
but they do the job right..
midi rhythms/clips and grooves are plentiful..
(and I like the ability to 'rip grooves' from audio ...)
for 'humanizing' randomization and lags...I'm beginning to use m4l more and more..

I have Superior Drummer 2 and am quite happy with it. It has tons of midi files played by drummers also but I program drums myself. It helps to play parts in with pads and then quantize to a percentage, edit by overriding the grid, groove pool etc. I've heard great things about Addictive drums also, and know people who use BFD as well. Session Drums are good but not quite up to the dedicated 3rd party programs.

The new Sound On Sound cover story is about programming realistic drums. Main tip, duplicate; get a 2 bar loop going with the timing/feel u like, double it to 4 bars, add very simple variation, double to 8 bars, add subtle variation, etc. Use these to make fills, and most of all think like a drummer- if ur playing a fill the hi hat stops playing cos u only have 2 hands etc. I know a lot of drummers and have played a bit so I just try to visualize what they'd be playing. The midi files that come with these programs are too busy and complex for most styles of music.

Thanks for replies and suggestions.
I have to say that I'm pretty happy with Session Drums.
Sounds I like, variations with Macros and Live integration make it the perfect tool for me.
I use long clip columns with random variations and that gives me some 'human feel' together with grooves.
However when asked that question I wasn't able to reply and to be honest sometimes I wish
I had a 'real' drummer under the hood..to speed up my drum programming!
I'll try anybodyhuman tips. A good enhancement.
My friend runs on Mac OS X so I told him to try Addictive Drums.

None of the above except for Jamstix can produce Artificially Intelligent generated grooves played like a human. Some have MIDI files from various drummers, so those files have a human element, but cannot generate 'humanized' grooves from scratch.

Jamstix is awesome for this, but the quality of the actual drum sounds is not always as good as some of the others mentioned above. *this is not to say it's bad, but not quite as great as Ocean Way Drums, Steven Slate or some of the libraries for BFD/Addictive/Superior Drummer etc*

Ralph Zeuner, the programmer and owner of Rayzoon Jamstix, is also a top guy who is really helpful, likes bug reports and fixes them quickly, and was awesome to me, supplying me twice with the lost serial code when my hardware was messed up.
