USB Turntable
USB Turntable
I was recently given a cheap USB turntable as a gift, and I was planning on exchanging it for one of these guys: http://www.google.com/search?aq=f&sourc ... +TURNTABLE
Would this be a good choice for an intermediate producer looking to get into more advanced sampling techniques as well as scratching (only in the studio), or is it worth spending the $ on a non-usb deck? If so, what would you recommend?
Thank you!

Re: USB Turntable
i think that USB turntables are usually meant to reap tracks from vinyl, if you need it for sampling & scratching i will go with a classic Technics 1200 for few reasons.
1 the stanton is belt drive and you really need a direct drive for scratching and a dj mixer too, you are not going to be able to scratch and record it trough usb, you need a crossfader to scratch
2 evry usb turntable i had (maybe not this one) has some kind of shitty stylus, the sound that comes out it's usually not that great, at least in my experience, infact i have an hi-fi kind of esoteric turntable that sounds great for the sampling and reaping purpouse
hope that helps

Re: USB Turntable
Instead of trying to buy a USB turntable, why not buy a standard turntable (much more choice)
and a small USB mixer (again lots of choice)?
More versatile, because you have gain and EQ on the mixer and line inputs & a crossfader.
You will still be able to record from vinyl, but you can also record from any other line
sources, microphone, even record whilst a DJ is mixing on it.

Re: USB Turntable
I Have a set of sl1210's for Scratching/Dj'ing and a T.92 for sampling and Riping.
I would never attempt to scratch on the T.92, the tonearm is just not built for it.

Re: USB Turntable
Great info guys, thanks a lot. I'd rather not spend money on a mixer as I use my APC40 to control my live sets and would prefer to keep my setup as simple as possible. I'm not really into traditional djing so i wouldn't have too much use for the eq pots either. With the Technics would it be possible to set it up as its own track with ext. instrument and use the APC's crossfader, or is a mixer really the way to go?

Re: USB Turntable
i think it's possible, but if you really plan on doing some scratching get a direct drive turntable

Re: USB Turntable
+ for direct drive.
Also, even the cheap direct drives are no good for scratching. Stick with the technics and you can't go wrong. Even then, you'll probably want to swap the standard stylus for one designed for scratching...

Re: USB Turntable
It needn't be expensive. Numark M1 = £75 for example.msteele wrote:I'd rather not spend money on a mixer
Yes, because it will provide the necessary RIAA preamp for the turntable.msteele wrote:is a mixer really the way to go?

Good point..In this case would I need an audio interface to run the mixer into or would a usb mixer suffice?102455 wrote:It needn't be expensive. Numark M1 = £75 for example.msteele wrote:I'd rather not spend money on a mixer

Re: USB Turntable
The USB mixer is the audio interface.
Look at it as a fancy external sound card, with knobs on!
