Industry Standard VST's?

Post by BoxDJ » Tue Oct 12, 2010 4:56 am

What VST's are the mainstream artists using nowadays? People such as Guetta, deadmau5, Daft Punk, Usher, etc.

I assume that most of them are using NI Komplete 7. What can you guys pick out?

Most of these artists probably have their stuff mixed by pros in a studio with Protools.

Most big commercial studios make heavy use of Waves, Soundtoys, McDSP, Sonnox and quite often stuff like UAD and Powercore.

Deadmau5 endorses Cytomic 'The Glue' compressor, which is a good choice for SSL G buss compression at 99 bucks. Then again, he also endorses FL Studio

Any specific instruments/effects? I see those up there are more for mastering.

Do you mean VST synths ?

The above effects are very much for mixing (mix compressors, EQs, modulation FX, etc), with some mastering processors, but perhaps what you're asking is which synths do they use ?

Deadmau5 certainly uses FXpansions's synths and Xfer's Nerve for drums.

Does he charge you $100 to use it if you sell your work commercially, which he does for his loops and samples included with FLStudio (allegedly or at least Image Line had to issue a disclaimer saying it was for 'demo' purposes only and not to be used commercially as it was not royalty free)?

To be fair, if it was something created by him or under his name by a company associated with him and sold commercially itself, it will probably be royalty free. There's not a big market for sample packs you buy which you then have to further compensate for if using in your own music for sale !

Some weeks ago a friend of mine (producer and composer in germany, many no.1 singles and albums) called me and asked "can you do me a patch like David Guettas peep peep sexy bitch peep peep sexy bitch...? This lead sound you know..."
So i made him a copy of this sound using the Arturia Minimoog 2.0 .

Did you charge him for the patch?

It took half an hour or so. Its basically a saw wave and a harmony on top of it. It was part of a package that i did for him. I did not wanted to charge him anything because he's my friend, but he insisted to pay for it...:-).
