demo song contest -> Live 5
demo song contest -> Live 5
i'm assuming this contest means that v5 is on the way, and it's not going to be a free upgrade. after the Operator brouhaha, i don't think anyone from Ableton will be posting any hints since that pretty much bit them in the ass.
so ... aside from proper cpu optimization, what do you think we can expect from v5? after playing with Reason 3, the cpu issues with Live's vsti usage became a lot more noticable to me, enough so that i might give frooty poo a go.

too bad other manufacturers didn't give their products such a bad name as Fruity Loops. wtf were they thinking? or rather, wtf were they drinking? mebbe ableton should've named their product Raw or Douche or something.

let's all come up with new names for Live...Rx wrote:too bad other manufacturers didn't give their products such a bad name as Fruity Loops. wtf were they thinking? or rather, wtf were they drinking? mebbe ableton should've named their product Raw or Douche or something.
here's my contribution. If you rearrange ableton live you can get the words
"no table vile"...
Re: demo song contest -> Live 5
actually, Live uses VSTi's about as effeciently as any other Host in terms of CPU. (On Mac, its actually even more effecient for just plugin hosting than DP 4.5, DSP Quattro, and all the others except for Logic.) Plugins and how they are optimized for specific processor instructions are independent of the host. Even the operating system can help to improve plugin performance, but for the most part its generally not on the Host's back to improve plugin performance. Now, Live could improve how effecient its Mixer runs (perhaps this is where you are seeing slowdowns?), or its time stretching engine, but the code in plugins utilizes special instructions with or without the host's help.Rx wrote: so ... aside from proper cpu optimization, what do you think we can expect from v5? after playing with Reason 3, the cpu issues with Live's vsti usage became a lot more noticable to me, enough so that i might give frooty poo a go.
and comparing it to Reason 3 is troublesome,
Remember that Reason 3 doesn't use VST/VSTi's. All the instruments are proprietary to the application itself, so you really can't compare them to 3rd party instruments. The code is entirely different.
If you're using a PC, Live is plenty powerful - i think the "proper cpu optimization" needs to happen on that Mac side of things.
and i do think we'll get those optimizations in Live 5. not sure about PDC or Freeze, but i'm crossing my fingers.
i disagree - Live's on the heavy side when using vsti that i know are lighter in Cubase or Frooty Poo. i haven't done specific tests because i have had no time to make music lately, but i have tracks in SX that used a LOT more plugins than i've ever used in Live 4. the Reason comparison is not necessarily valid, but really made me realize that Live was not as efficient as SX was.

frankly, i think that if you have a Centrino 2ghz, and you want MORE power from live? well, i'll make it blunt - you probably aren't using all that power wisely mayhaps?Rx wrote:i disagree - Live's on the heavy side when using vsti that i know are lighter in Cubase or Frooty Poo. i haven't done specific tests because i have had no time to make music lately, but i have tracks in SX that used a LOT more plugins than i've ever used in Live 4. the Reason comparison is not necessarily valid, but really made me realize that Live was not as efficient as SX was.
I used to have an Athlon 64 3700. i never took it above 60% in Live 4. and thats running LOTS of heavy stuff. I just opened up the heaviest .als i ever ran. it was running 2 Imposcars, Korg MS-20 Legacy, Atmosphere, Oddity, an average Reaktor 4 ensemble, Waves RComp/L2/MaxxBass/RVerb, PSP Vintage Warmer, 3 TC Native Filtrators, TC Native Graphic EQ, 2 Simplers, and 2 full Impulses. It never went above 55% on that PC which is about even with a 2ghz Centrino.
I could never imagine wanting to run more than that in realtime. I rarely needed half the power that machine gave me with Live 4, thats one reason going back to the Powerbook wasn't hard.
It would take a Dual 2.5ghz G5 on the Mac side to get the same power the way Live is currently written.
so yea - all that said, and you want more power?
ummmm, ok
