The big bucks are in the consumer sector, not commercial, a fact many of us professional IT people are prone to forget

Microsoft is struggling to find a new niche as personal PC OS and Office products decline, but don't expect them to go under any time soon.

Its always hard to see the big picture when you are part of the picture; conversely its hard to understand what you are seeing if you don't know what you are looking at.

The problem with sitting on a cash pile is that interest rates are abysmal so if its not going to be used shareholders will rightly want it back as dividend. But at least they didn't invest it in real estate.

There were a couple potential problems mentioned in the RUMOR about Apple buying Sony. One would be existing partner agreements with Sony that would be rivals to what Apple has in mind. Right off the top of my head would be Google TV. Then there was the Japanese pride issue of not wanting to be bought out by an American company. Interestingly enough Sony had no comment on any of this. Usually if it's something completely made up a company would have something to say about the matter. Or maybe Sony's mouthpiece just needed a little more time to investigate before commenting.

I agree a takeover looks unlikely. Even if Sony sold Apple its pictures and music business, it would then leave Sony in the same position Apple is now re content. While Sony has had a rocky time recently it is far from being a basket case. Maybe Sony is happy to say nothing and watch its share price rise....

I really want it to be able to play anything that Quicktime can play, all streamed from my laptop. If it did that without me having to convert everything with Handbrake first, then I'd be super happy. So as neat as the streaming is now, for me it's still not making my life easier as I have to re-encode anything I want tot stream.

The Netflix stuff looks cool though, we might get it for that alone.

I loved it when it first came out but they really fell asleep on it and if you were there for the long history I had with it you'd see they made very little changes to it in that time. My one "fuck yeah, nice!" moment was when they added iTunes streaming music channels to it which I think should have always been there.

Honestly if they didn't cut the price by 2/3 (if you were an early adopter like me) and add Netflix to it I think it would mostly be an Apple Store shelf dust collecting box that falls under #3 on the Apple mission statement: Steve likes it so we still sell it.

Interestingly nearly all of the MS Office family of products were bought in from other companies. Powerpoint was a Mac programme with early WIndows ports included as a bonus giveaway, nevertheless it was good enough to see off the then market leaders Freelance and Harvard Graphics, both of which were considerably more expensive. Office has been available on Mac with similar though usually slightly different versions of the products right from the start and continues to be one of the best selling software packages on the Mac.
