macbook pro: intel core duo or i5/i7?

Post by swishniak » Thu Nov 11, 2010 8:41 am

this is a spin off thread from the other mbp query. . im thinking of getting a new macbook pro as backup, and since mine seems to be slowly dying after almost 3 years.

it looks like the i5/i7 processors are adding about 700 eu onto the price tags. im wondering what the differences are.

i know its possible to add more RAM, but it seems like many audio programs arent event utilizing these big RAM capabilities.

are there any other benefits or prospects that im missing out on that would justify this price difference? thanks.

I think it's not justify, 700 is too much for the difference.. I have an i5, very good.. I don't test the i7 but you can find some bench on the net.

Go for the i5.

I did a lot of research on this and I think the consensus is that the i7 is not worth the price difference. The performance increase is relatively small.

The i5 is more than sufficient!

or wait until the i7 becomes quadcore which will make a major difference. There are no dates on this, but it will surely happen sooner rather than later.

thanks but i was trying to decide between the old "core duo" (max 4 gb ram) and the new i5/i7s. this is the 700 difference. do you think its worth it?

Isn't the i7 already a quad core?

not in the macbooks. there are some mobile systems with i7 quadcores, but most are dualcores. only on the desktop, i7 == quadcore. then again, on the desktop, there are even i5 quadcores (the older i5), etc.. it's a mess.

but if you buy apple, you right now get dualcore all the way on the macbooks.

The i7/i5 is still a pretty big jump from a core duo though, I saw a 100% increase from my 2.13gHz C2d MBP when I got my i7. I still think we're a long way away from True quad core in a MBP, unless maybe we're talking the 17".
