Realtime pitchshifter for vocal treatment

Post by h:nez » Mon Nov 15, 2010 2:22 pm

Hi, i am looking for a pitchshifter to modify vocals in realtime.
it can be a VST or an external hardware unit.

Any recommendation?

Does somebody know which one the singer of Fever Ray uses?

Thanks

hi - rather than using an effect or a vst i found a really useful way to do repitching by going into the clip (your sample, .wav file or whatever) and using the TRANSPOSE function. If you drop or increase the transpose 12 points, you will change the melody one octave (i.e. your melody will stay the same but the voice will appear to be deeper or higher). If you drop or increase the transpose less or more than 12 points, you will change the melody.

to get a natural sounding voice (i.e. to make a woman's voice into a man's voice or vice versa) it is very important to control your transpose using the Complex Pro function. You will see a little white box to the right of the transpose wheel with the words Beats, Tones, Texture, etc. when you click on the box. Select Complex Pro at the bottom of this list. You will then be given two values called Formants and Envelopes which allow you to control how the voice or sound is transposed. Playing around with different combinations of these two numbers will give you the desired sound you want, whether it's a voice or an instrument you are repitching.

Additionally, using the envelope function (the little E in the left hand corner of all clip windows) and selecting the appropriate transpose function in the envelope menu which appears, you can DRAW in a melody using the mouse to basically create whatever melody you want from your .wav sample. this is specifically useful when sampling instruments, and generally the envelope function is a life-saver in a variety of ways.

hope that makes sense!

While all true, repitching clips doesn't help with realtime pitchshifting. Doesn't Live 8 come with a pitchshifter? I'm in 7 and use the Grain Delay, set the delay to the shortest millisecond and use the pitchshifter there. Doesn't sound too great but does the job for weird artifact pitch changes.

Here ya go...

Pitchfork: While we're talking about the sound and the recording, I'm sure you've been asked this question way too many times, but how do you achieve that effect on your vocals?

KDA: There are so many software programs that you can use. But I actually bought a physical machine, a TC-Helicon Live, which is very fun to use. But I also use the Steinberg VoiceMachine software plugin, which I think is also good. But with the Helicron machine, you can do like four harmonies at the same time, so I use it in "Concrete Walls".
No...I am 3phase!

yeh, it may be that for the Fever Ray-ish sounds you are looking for, you might want to your spoken voice as the carrier for an instrument melody.

Computer music had a harmonizer vst. Dunno if it is still on their discs. Made by Melda Productions.

Kerovee is a free 'auto tune'.

That's all I've got for suggestions

Live's Grain delay can do it as well.
