God is Santa Claus. He gives presents to rich western kids at Christmas, because the Jesus kid was born.

This is funny to me. Checking Laptop screen BAD, Checking iPad screen GOOD.

That's because you don't get it. The point is that with iPad apps like touchAble, you have one device that shows all necessary information like clip names/colors so that you know exactly where you are and what you're controlling, on the device that you're actually using. With the APC40/Launchpad, you're still forced to look back and forth between the computer screen and the midi controller.

OH I get it. I just think the statement was silly. I mean in a nutshell, your saying, laptop screens are not as hip to look at as iPad screens.

I actually want the iPAD for it's flexibility as a controller, but touch screens will never replace my love of hardware.

No. You actually don't get it. The whole point is only having to look at one device which is also the actual device that you're controlling because you can actually see what you're controlling and where it is. It's not at all about whether something is cooler or hipper to look at.

I'm just teasing you a bit, no need to get your panties in a pinch.

I own a few button matrix controllers, I completely understand the value in the iPAD as a controller, and the difference between looking at an iPAD screen and getting a complete visual to what I am controlling as opposed to the back and fourth controller screen thing. I get it.

Nevertheless your statement still made me laugh at how silly it sounds, in a screen vs screen kind of way. Sorry it hurt your feelings.

No you cannot look to only one device to see all your set of clips, the only device you can do this is the laptop screen.
In an iPAD screen you need to define the clips large enought to you be able to fire them with yours fingers, this will limit you to a grid of clips smaller than the lanchpad, and if you want as you say, place more info on clips you are more limited. You can say that you can scroll the grid on iPAD, but scroll to WHERE? You need to know WHERE to scroll BEFORE, or you will be in trouble performing with this controller, worst if you need to "share" the screen with others controls like faders and knobs...

Using an Launchpad or APC you look at the laptop screen, where you can see ALL the set and navigate with the red area on the screen to fire clips on the controller.

IMHO

If you want to know where to scroll to, you could always use the fullscreen Overview function in Griid which gives you a map of your entire Live set. You can tap anywhere and jump to that place in the session view. :-)

Know before you speak. Check out the Griid app to see how it shows you where you are and where all the clips better and faster than Live itself on a computer screen.

I know my friend, and no, you CANNOT see all your live set with clip labels in any app on iPAD better than on an 17' laptop screen, even 15'.
Note that I'm not saying that launchpad only can, I'm only saying that I use the LAPTOP screen to see the clips and launchpad to fire then, and that I CANNOT do the same with an iPAD only, without looking to the laptop screen, just because IMHO it's far away from the best setup TO ME.

I have an iPAD, and use it for effects, X/Y pads and another usefull things, but for clip launching and session view, I think that laptop screen and launchpad do it better, again it's my opinion.

Maybe some future apps can do it better, on iPAD, like showing the clip's waveform and loop braces, but today I can't see any app better than live's session view to "overview" your entire set.

It's such a pain to have to put the effort in and glance up from my Launchpad to my laptop screen though. It takes literally a second. "Can't someone else do it?"

In all seriousness once I've rehearsed a new set enough I don't need to look at the laptop screen that much. I know pretty much which clips are where in my set. And when I do need to look up to check the laptop screen, I know where my fingers are on the Launchpad. It's almost like a guitar fretboard in that sense.

But to each their own.

EDIT: The answer to this debate is tablet PCs or Macbooks, of course.

No one said anything about seeing clip labels while seeing all your live set. With Griid for example, though, you can see the clip colors unlike Launchpad/APC40. This allows Griid to have a full overview which generates a bird's eye view of your whole Live set at the tap of a button. And you can just touch anywhere in the overview to jump immediately to that part.

@humnumb

Very nice view and LARGE set 8O

If you feel confortable with this view on an iPAD screen it's OK, I cannot tell you what is better to you.

But to me, I feel better with my laptop screen and launchpad to fire clips, when I swith to an entire song in a middle of a set for example, I need to see the waveform and loop braces, etc...
