I agree i have the 650s and they are great.leedsquietman wrote:All headphones are hyped !!! Especially in the low end and around 10 Khz.
I have Senn HD650s ans they are the most comfortable cans i have. Any closed back headphone is going to give you sore ears after a couple of hours of continuous use.
I would be careful with blanket statements such as HD650s and DT990s are coloured - they are among the most common cans in high end studios, who would not use crap and where is the testing to substantiate this. I've used Senn HD600s and my opinion is that they are not more neutral or better than HD650s. In this price range the AKG 701 is worth considering and note, these are open backed headphones, so no good for tracking.
I love audio technicas for tracking and some mixing, but I have owned ath-m40fs and ath-m50 and neither are comfortable for extended listening periods, which is one of the few negatives about them, but they are no more uncomfortable than any closed back headphone.

Re: Most comfortable studio headphones
as i said, i've never personally compared HD600s with HD650s. i have however read a lot of mixed opinions by reputable people on whether one is better than the other for "reference" listening. i certainly never suggested that HD650s are "crap".leedsquietman wrote:All headphones are hyped !!! on the other hand, it is very clear from both tests and comments that in the beyerdynamic range, DT 880s are much flatter than both DT 770s or DT 990s.
that said, no two people will ever agree, because personal preference, hearing response and anatomical differences all have a big impact on how a particular pair of cans sound.
there's lots of great info and lab tests of headphones over at HeadRoom Audio. you can build comparison graphs for a range of parameters, and there is info on how to interpret the graphs properly.

it is normal for cans to have low end boost and high end cut to try and compensate for the fact that the drivers are clamped to your head. however, many headphones are hyped in the same way that hifi speakers tend to be hyped, with a smiley loudness curve.
Re: Most comfortable studio headphones
I like my DT770 PRO, very good headphone. For cheaper listening i use a HD25sp.

Re: Most comfortable studio headphones
The comparison test is interesting but not that useful, because it is based upon a drum machine sample, plus various sine waves etc, which is by no means a test of real life situations. It's better than nothing and representative to a degree but by no means a complete range of testing.
As for comments, someone with a bit of influence at kvr or gearslutz says one thing, everyone else follows. If your choice really is your personal preference, then that's completely fine, but correctional bias/placebo effect does come into play sometimes with some people who are too weak to state their real opinion if it goes against the grain.

I have 595s and they are very comfy for long periods, They have very nice shaped rotating well padded ear bits and a very comfy head band which has good adjustments. I rate them very highly. They are also very clean sounding with a slightly higher than neutral balance. They are open though.

I have the HD600, they are very comfortable, I regularly wear them for hours at a time. There is no question that they are less "warm" sounding than the HD650, and to my ears they sound more balanced. Of course just my opinon, YMMV.

My mileage does vary !
Both are great. Learn to compensate for both of them, as you do for studio monitors and you can make them close to neutral. None of them (or anything else, including DT880s, DT990s, or AKG 701 or 702) are totally neutral out of the box, they have to be burned in and then you learn about the characteristics of the headphones and accommodate that into any mixing decisions. Really mixing on headphones should only be for secondary checks anyway. I do this and mostly use my Senn HD650s for listening pleasure, they are comfortable - I use Audio Technica ATH-M50 mostly for tracking closed cans. I wouldn't swap my HD650s for HD600s even though both are excellent.

Leeds, have you actually owned/used both for any length of time? Not trying to be a dick or anything, I'm just curious. I had both side by side for quite a while, and to me, the 650's have a distinctly warm, laid back presentation. They do both sound fantastic though and in the context of the this thread (comfort) they are all but identical.

Re: Most comfortable studio headphones
I have owned the 650s for 6 years. I don't own 600s but have used them before at my friend's studio many times.

I think the 600s are awesome cans too, in case anyone misunderstands. Yes, it is a question of personal taste.

Re: Most comfortable studio headphones
most comfortable from AKG's are definetly Beyer's. And sound on sound magazine ran an extensive review on "mixing headphones" and named the DT880 pro (250ohm) the best headsets(flatest, pleasingly natural to monitors), and now that you can buy them in the US for about 225 is really a steal. I love mine and also own the dt770's and HD25mk2. For truth and confort 880's all the way
