dremel + screwdriver + screws + APC20 + APC40 =

Post by Digital_Damage » Fri Dec 31, 2010 6:07 pm

So I got sick and tired of the stupid little sides that are on the apc20 and apc40 eating up my deskspace.

So I pulled them apart cut off the tabs and scrwed them together.

Very cool. I think I would have put it on the other side though (if possible). Not that I would dare do something like this.

Nice job - I was thinking of getting an APC20 to go with my 40 and happen to have a dremel :)
Might carve up my BCR/BCF2K as well.

You just need to get APC60 printed on it and you could start a good product hoax :)
Nothing to see here - move along!

You can go either way with it, I just wanted all the faders on the same side.

It was extremely simple.

Remove the top of the crossfader on the apc 40 and remove the screws from the bottom. pull the crossfader out and unclip the wires from each other.

Remove the rest of screws on the bottom (make sure you place them in separate containers, since they are of different length). Don't forget the screws under the rubber feet.

Take the hex screws off of each side on the outside, and remove the screws holding them on from the inside. Trim off the plastic pieces the stick out.
Get one large diameter short bolt and nut (there will be a large hole) and thread it through that. Get 4 small screws and thread them through the existing holes that were holding on the sides. I alternated the screws from left to right so the stress would be distributed to each unit.
Screw the bottom back on both units, reclip the crossdfader and place the top back on and you are all done.

I am about to buy an APC20 to add to my APC40 and was planning on doing the same thing as far as physically combining them. I have some questions about how they work together more than how to combine them though. Can you use the UP/DOWN and Side to Side controls to move both the 40 and the 20s clip matrix together? Do the scene launch buttons on both launch the whole scene (Id So can I map the Buttons on one to do something else while the other still launches whole scenes)? Can you assign knobs on the 40 to tracks on the 20s matrix?

I have only ever used it in "combo" mode, it just extends the number of channels to the right. When you page around they maintain the relationship.

The scene launchers on both function as if the same, same as the master fader. I have not tired to re-map them. I would imagine it is possible.

Which is fair enough. I didn't mean to sound like I was knocking your creation. It really is very cool. If I had the space and the money, I would definitely do this. I wonder if the chaps at Akai thought about this as a possibility when designing and making them... Though I don't think this was the reason they're made like this. More like an inevitable co-incidence, I suppose. Still, one of the best hardware mods I've seen for a while. Simple but very effective.
