There are always rumors - but that's all rumors.

As for Live 9 at NAMM I don’t expect it! Some say – Live 9 will be a stable version of 8 with no new features. This will not happen as it would be a confession by Ableton that they were selling an unfit saleable product (under the UK trades description act so would have loads of UK customers applying for their money back). Live 9 would have to be given as a free upgrade.

So Live 9 will have new features… and unfortunately the competition in the DAW market has hotted in the past few months up with the likes of Pro-Tools and Cakewalk offering many features now at lower costs. I feel Ableton will need more time to address that they are going to put in/take out, offer new, make stable. Therefore, I think Live 9 at NAMM unlikely. However, Ableton can always prove us mere mortals wrong.

was the ableton 8 upgrade free to users of all the paid versions of 7? (intro suite and the normal full one)
because having to pay to go from 8 intro to 9 intro would suck.

I would rather think that ableton will go hardware, like NI with maschine and the traktor-mixer. Selling software is sooo 00s.

It seems unlikely to me that Ableton will introduce a hardware product that competes with Akai and Novation.

Ableton may have a presence, a stand somewhere perhaps, but I really doubt they'll announce anything because they aren't listed in the 'Events'. If they were announcing anything then they'd have a mention like this one

http://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2011/events/thursday
STEINBERG NORTH AMERICA
Booth #6528
10:30am
Steinberg Press Event: Booth #6528, Hall A, Anaheim Convention Center
Join us for two major product announcements on Thursday, January 13 at 10:30 AM. Refreshments served.
but they don't, so they won't

I guess they should stay home and release a stabel version 8 before charging money for a not working version of Live 9.

would be nice, but expensive if it was to have acceptable build quality.

Exactly, from what I understand, they wont have a booth this year (they usually do), so as a result, my guess is that they wont be announcing a new version at NAMM.

If they do more hardware collaborations, my guess is those will be displayed/demo-ed at the hardware (Akai, Novation, etc) booths

(*all speculation and guesswork of course*)

It's a shame if they don't have a booth. I always liked going to their clinics. I know its a tremendous cost though so if they feel they aren't benefitting from attending I can see why they'd pull the plug.

As far as 9 and NAMM... sometimes I wonder if these rumors ever influence the companies. I hope they don't think, "oh the users expect 9 soon so lets try and get it out by NAMM!" I doubt this is the case, but I wonder if it enters their minds.

When it comes out isn't as important to me as how good it is. Take your time.

There's nothing more annoying than people trying to parlay "I wish" into rumor with absolutely no substantiated facts and it's usually by people who aren't paying attention enough to know what is or is not going on. They'll also be completely unaware of when a company says for a fact that something will not be happening.

Actually there's some things that are more annoying, but it's up there.
