New free OS X program to disable spacebar
I don't know if something like this already existed, but someone asked for it this morning in a thread and it seemed like a simple thing to program, so I went ahead and did it. I wanted to learn a little bit more about CGEventTaps so it was a good exercise.
It just has a button to turn the spacebar on and off. You need to have "Enable access for assistive devices" enabled in the Universal Access system preferences for it to work, or run it as root... those are the only ways you're given permission to intercept the keystrokes.

actually, it looks like that post asking for the blocker was made in 2006. I might be a little late...

You're lucky, that means you've never accidentally hit it during the middle of a DJ set...seattletruth wrote:i dont quite get why you want to block spacebar?

Re: New free OS X program to disable spacebar
amazing, i've been looking for something like this for years!
Is there any way you could make it enabled by default?
I have an automator script that launches a max patch and uses a certain ableton preferences file for all my midi routing. I added this program to the list but when I launch it i still have to enable it, its not a big deal but i could probably forget to enable it at some point.
thanks!
p.s. I lived in santa barbara for around 4 years when i went to brooks 04-08

Sure. I was too lazy to make a preference pane so I just compiled a separate application.pink noise wrote:amazing, i've been looking for something like this for years!

Re: New free OS X program to disable spacebar
Not sure I understand the question... you start the app, your spacebar is blocked. Quit the app (or press the appropriate button in the minimal app GUI) and the spacebar works again. As mentioned earlier, you have to have "Enable access for assistive devices" checked in the Universal Access system preferences in order for it to work correctly. Or run it as root.Captain Johnson wrote:how does it work???.......... tell me how it works????

You really just need to hit the ext switch in the upper left of the screen once you start playing to disable the spacebar. Then whatever you have set to control live in your midi prefs will what Live listens for.

Re: New free OS X program to disable spacebar
Yeah, that works... if you have an actual external sync you can use to change tempo. Otherwise, with external sync enabled, you can't change tempo except by tapping. Right?
