When Zappa meets Meshuggah (+electronics & steroids)
Hi,
just dropping by to share with you the joy and blast I have with this band from norway I just discovered:
SHINING
they come from the free jazz scene, and progressively raised into the free metal scene.
their last album, "blackjazz", is for me a huge aural orgasm, really violent, harsh, but fully melodic, emotionnal, and really technical while never being kinda demonstration type (technicity is not on the front, it only serves the global stuff)
synths merge with saxophone and industrial guitar riffs, shouts induce a sense of tension, drums are incredible, rock'n roll influences are dealing with electro, jazz, extreme metal, polyrythmia, etc.
AWESOME
I ordered their 2 last albums. it's gold to my ears.

cheers

brilliant stuff. laughed my arse off all the way through Blackjazz. totally entertaining.

I'm not convinced that any band can live up to such a description but I'm certainly going to check them out when I'm at home

Re: When Zappa meets Meshuggah (+electronics & steroids)
well I'm not really sure the zappa comparison is pertinent,
perhap's King krimson is better (the last track on their blackjazz album is a king crimson cover)
it makes me, sometimes, at some points, think of:
meshuggah
mr bungle
fantomas
nin
marinlyn manson
estradasphere
queens of the stone age
...
Love this stuff

Re: When Zappa meets Meshuggah (+electronics & steroids)
I love this music so much that I try to listen to it a lot, but it's so much speed and like an ecstasy+lsd cocktail that I can't listen to it that much.
I'm stuck.
Ok I listen to it again.
I can't.
I want.
I try again.
Tonight.
No.
Morning is better for this shit.
Well, I'm too speed at work.
lol
I HAVE to listen to it again but it squeltches me. (new word I guess)
WHAT's THIS SHIT?????
I'm having a love/hate relationship with Shining.
Brilliant.

I like it! My neighbors probably don't - take that loud barking dogs. Ha.
Re: When Zappa meets Meshuggah (+electronics & steroids)
I went to buy the CD but according to the guy in the shop it's not out in the UK until March...boooooooooooo

Re: When Zappa meets Meshuggah (+electronics & steroids)
got their 2 last albums (grindstone and blackjazz) on amazon for around 12euros each, really good deal for such quality music!
their former album, grindstone, is really less violent, much more "sweet", much more Mr Bungle, really cool too.
cheers

Just noticed that these guys are actually playing a couple of towns across from me in Reading on the 7th. Might go check out their live chops.

Re: When Zappa meets Meshuggah (+electronics & steroids)
Cezband you lucky guy
have a look on youtube or others for live footage of Shining ===> that's absolutely massive and amazing, I hope I can see them one day, I just noticed they were in Paris this 2010's automn... but I didn't know them yet!!!
I'll compensate when I'll go see Meshuggah at the Hellfest festival this summer in france... I hope they'll play more than the 40minutes we got from them at the same Hellfest festival some years ago when they were not that much mainstream (not that they are now mainstream... but at least they deserve full 1h concert lenght, I hope...)
cheers

Re: When Zappa meets Meshuggah (+electronics & steroids)
Not so lucky me, Supamonsta...turns out there's more than one European metal band called Shining. The one playing in the next town is some awful black metal dirge from Norway, not the crazy jazzmetal from Sweden. Just glad I didn't buy tickets straightaway!
Seriously, how can there be two bands, in the same broad genre, from broadly the same part of the world, with the exact same name? Screw it, I'm going to call my band Radiohead in the hopes that people will accidentally buy tickets for our shows.
If anyone wants to buy tickets, make sure you're going to see the right one!
