set up your master- folder Hierarchy

Post by datagroove » Fri Feb 14, 2003 11:00 am

Set yourself up for success in regard to keeping in the creative mood- come up with a way that works for you and your method of working to organize your folders and audio files on your hard drive so you don’t have to disrupt your creative flow to find an audio file. For me i set up my folder structure like this.. (not perfect yet, but getting there)

Bass Line_ chil
Bass Line_ aggressive
Breaks_ ambient
Breaks_ electro
Breaks_ house
Breaks_ other
Breaks_ techno
Drum Elm_ kick + other
Drum Elm_ special
Drum Elm_ tweaked
Glitch_ beats
Glitch_ other
Instrument_ brass/winds
Instrument_ guitar
Instrument_ piano/keys
Instrument_ strings
Other_ ethnic
Other_ fx
Other_ radio/tv rip
Other_ vocal
Perc_ bass drum
Perc_ hand drums
Perc_ hh/cymbal
Perc_ mix bag
Perc_ shakers/bells/blocks
Perc_ snare
Synth_ arpeggio
Synth_ downbeat push
Synth_ melodies
Synth_ pads/strings/textures
Synth_ sequenced

Very dope tip mr. dg! Knowing exactly where stuff is and what I actually have on my hard drive will help me to bang stuff out a lot faster. Thanks!

I found I needed fewer categories so that I could spend less time on deciding where every file fits. In fact I divided my folders into 3 so I can have 1 attached to each 'memory' position (1-3).

1. My Live sets and Folders for audio created in the Live sessions
2. My Sounds - Categorized by sessions (groups)
3. 3rd party - Anything I didn't create (samples)

I'm with neuronaut on this one.

I found the more subcategories I had, the more time I spent expanding and contracting folders trying to get what I wanted.

I'm more interested in "playing" a few samples in realtime (think "beat-juggling"), than cut'n'paste arrangements, so I also make sure that every sample counts - if I'm not using it, I lose it.
