Ableton Live pitch-shifting

Post by nc2010 » Sat Apr 09, 2011 8:43 am

Hello,

Is there some pitch-shifting device, included in Live, that allows to Transpose, without using the Warp features ?

(I don't want the quality of pitchshifting, which is a fairly simple thing, to be dependant on the quality of the transients that Ableton Live has detected.... I'm sure it exists a pitchshifting tool, independant of the Warp, but where ?)

thx

Not what you're after, I guess, but there is a device called frequency shifter.

No, the frequency shifter does not pitch shift.
Pitch shifting multiplies the frequency, while the frequency shifter adds to the frequency, resulting in a very different sound.

If you want to pitch shift a sample without warping you can either just use an audio clip's transpose knob while leaving warp turned off, or you can load it in a simpler/sampler and draw notes in the piano roll (C3 being the samples original pitch)

Puremagnetik has some pitch shifters within M4L called Max fuel, there are some free in MaxforLive online library i think.

Is there anyway to do this without the delay and hearing the original sound?

You can use the frequency shifter to fine tune things that are of a fixed pitch.

I use it occasionally to correct the tuning of kick drums. (Live drum takes)

A great tip indeed! I haven't tried it out yet but it looks very promising so far. :)

Use warp, remove transients. If the transients are all you're concerned about and you do not need to do realtime pitch shift, warping works just fine. Just use a minimal amount of markers, etc.

Anyone know of a stereo pitch shifting M4L plugin that can do Right and Left channels independently? For instance, shift the right -3 and the left +3 semi-tones?

If you look in Packs in the Ableton site, filter it to free max ones, there is one pack of devices that utilize tools from the more recent version of max.

It has a lot of harmonizers, pitch and tuning, pitch followers, etc.

the last big update of Cycling 74 patches for M4L focused entirely on pitch shifting devices (actual pitch shifting, not frequency shifting). There's like 6+ of them in there covering a range of tasks. This stuff is in the standard ableton packs page, and it's free.
