none of the things I want to do with groups can actually be done.

Well, thank you for asking us! It can be more playfull, if that helps? Can change it into funny colors. I dont think anyone here knows anything about Live 9. But in 8, you can give it many nice happy colors! Do you like funny colors? ;P

I hope you've submitted this feature request to Ableton.
"Please let us do something cool with groups".

Ya, that's right up there on my wishlist for Live 9 along with recording clip automation and more rack macros.

One thing I can think of would be group track macro devices which would let groups function like racks but have different clips inside. And groups within groups would be nice. Not sure what other cool things I can't do...
