Newb Question: Korg Electribes - Why would you want one?

Post by ryanisflyboy » Thu May 05, 2011 11:07 pm

Korg has two Electribes that look almost identical. They have similar model names. Best I've been able to tell they seem almost identical. Am I correct in understanding the EMX1SD has some kind of synth engine in it, and the ESX1SD is essentially a sampler?

I don't have a desire to purchase either unit, right now. I don't think I know enough to get any use out of them. I am, however, interested in learning more about these devices and other similar devices. If someone has Ableton Live (or some other DAW), would they need/want one of these units? If the sequencing features were excluded - working just as dedicated hardware samplers/synths - how do they stack up? Anything special about them? What would you get instead?

I know these units are really popular, just curious why. What are some common use cases?

LOL. my thoughts exactly... if you have a DAW there is no practical reason to have an electribe.

one is a sampler and one is a drum synthesizer (uses oscillators & VCAs & shit to generate sounds).

i still use my ER1 for drum programming. i like the interface more, like the "accent" function, and like the swing settings. plus its got some drum sounds you can't get anywhere else. i bought mine before i had a DAW so that's my excuse.

Well, The main Reason people like these things is because they are so damn easy to operate. The sequencer is ridiculously easy to use. They have lots of knobs (that's always a plus).

The main reason I bought mine was because a solo act called "Tonikom." She uses an ESX-1 with no midi and Ableton Live. I would say most of her composition is Using the Electribe and the rest with Ableton.

I have an EMX-1, It makes some really unique synth sounds. The drum sounds are not my liking, but for someone who does popular dance styles it is really great.

Actually I want to use just an EMX and an ESX with a Kaoss Pad. That would be really fun!

If you want to see what they are capable of check out this called denkitribe on youtube. He is so good with using Korg's machines they asked him to do a demo and so presets for when they updated the ESX.

i have an older korg electribe es-1, it was my first sampler......its reallllly easy to use...and it sounds pretty alright too......its a cool little sampler......although i must admit, now that i have ableton, it has been collecting dust....the only issue i had with it was that it is a little tough to edit samples...but other than that it was a good 1st sampler for me.

I love my electribes. I have the first generation ea1 and er1. They're wicked little groove boxes, nice to program, great sound and nice filters. Really nice to use for live performance as well - lots of lovely knobs to tweak!

It's an excellent hands on tool and it sounds gritty and burly and absolutely brutish when you want it to. I know the Tonikom girl, Rachel. She actually shares her ESX with her hubby, Ben from Terrorfakt.

The EMX is one of the best ever groove boxes, it's tons of fun and can sound great. I had a lot of fun with mine, I'd definitely recommend it.

I used to own an ESX-1. Great box, fun, intuitive, so hands on. Good sound quality, but noisy.

But not much more money would get you an iPad and Nanostudio, which is about to receive a very substantial update. 15 sets of 16 drum pads? 15 Eden synths? Or a mix of both? Configurable effects chains?

Yeah, as I said, I USED to own an ESX-1...
