How to add warmess to your setup for less than 100$
Re: How to add warmess to your setup for less than 100$
imo, tape machines take too much maintenance to be worth the effort. they sound great if they are properly calibrated, but if they haven't been calibrated in a while, they can suck the life out of a track and really change the frequency response.

run the external out through any piece of analog gear. moogerfoogers work exceptionally well. the effect signal can stay mostly dry if you wish. it will still be passed through the analog circuitry and sound like a million bucks. only thing with this is that you will need two of them for a stereo signal and just one is well over the $100.

That's exactly what I do to get the (at least an illusion of) warmth. I use TL Audio's Ebony A2.McQ714 wrote:run the external out through any piece of analog gear.
But now that I've read this thread, I'm gonna try a cassette recorder also. Cheers for the tip everyone!

small feedback+eq also does wonders...
and multi band compressors (in changing the freq response)
I think live has some very nice stuff that can make sounds be perceived as "warmer"
about 'tape saturation' ... don't forget to have the signal extra-warm on the inputs ! great for hi-freq rich material..

most usefull and cheap in usage are 3 head tapedecks with discret circuit.. you pay a bit more for thosse because the hifi guys hunt them aswell.. but still under 350 for an old revox deck...

and i have 1 of theese babys..
the first consumer valve stereo tape machine.. the one that started revox comercial success as the amateur brand of studer..
it has only one rubber part in the tapetransport because its a real 3 motor machine..all valve circuit ..devently is colourng the signal a lot in nice ways and adds a very special noise that is embeded in the sound rather than above it .. machines go cheaply but might need service..
some rare 15 ips versions are out there but than they get expensiv.
