fixing a resonant frequency in my room

I don't have much treatment in my studio space. The area is mostly carpeted (thick carpet). The ceiling is about 12-14 feet high, and the room about 20x20. It is sort of oddly shaped and has slanted walls in some spots. Actually I thought the room itself would be pretty good acoustically, however I'm no expert.

It took me some time to realize, but I notice the C# below middle C, has this aweful resonant frequency - it is much louder than all the other notes. It is only that C# that just creates this "booming" muddiness. The D right above it has it a little bit, but not nearly as much.

How can I treat for this? What software can I use (combined with a mic) to analyze my listening position and make sure i'm hearing my mixes correctly?

by the sounds of it you have a modal peak at about 140 Hz, and you need bass traps.

actually pretty much every small room needs bass traps if you want to create an effective mixing space.

Why´s that? I´d go the other route and write all the tunes in c# to get that heavy, booming bass .

Yep, bass traps is certainly the established way.

Alternatively : I invested in a tank of helium to raise the pitch of the room so I can hear the bass properly. remember to tape the doors and windows to prevent seepage though. To hear the high frequencies I also bought a tank of sulfur hexafluoride gas. It pitches the whole thing down nicely.

anyways, gearslutz has probably the #1 place on the internet to discuss room treatment. i absolutely didn't know anything about it, and a week's worth of research and I built 17 OC703 panels myself. 7 of which were bass traps
